Knocking noise in/under the trunk area when stopped

My 2007 pontiac G5 has had a knock in or under the trunk since I purchased it brand new. It of course does not make the noise when I take it in the shop but has continued for two years now. ANy suggestions. And now when I apply my breaks there is a grinding and knocking in my steering column. I feel like I have a lemon.

For one, you need to get your brakes checked. And the knocking could just be something loose in the exaust system. I've noticed that G5's weren't built very well.

Not a wheel bearing - probably not a CV joint. Could be something inside the transaxle. Is it possible something came loose in the caliper-rotor area ?

I have heard a knocking noise in my engine for the past year, and it was knocking when I purchased it. Is it likely to be a rod knock, or would have the engine failed by now.

Well, if the knocking noise is like once a second, it could be a camshaft bearing.
Some engine builders consider a knocking in the engine as a failure in the engine and recommend a rebuild, if economically possible.

How does it drive?

The pontiac G5 has a defect on some of them that need a new ignition switch. I just had to get mine replaced because mine did the exact same thing. If you remove the fuse it will not fix the problem!
