My temperature guage stays in the middle, is this ok?

I recently was low on water. I filled it with proper amount of water and coolant and now my temperature guage goes quickly to about half way up and stays there. Is this okay? When I was low on water the guage went all the way to hot and the engine light came on. It appears to be fine now but where should the temp. guage stay? I immediately stopped when the engine light came on and didn't drive it until it cooled of and fluids were in it.

Yes, the temperature gauge should normally stop in the middle, between the cold and hot points on the gauge. When the engine is cold the thermostat will be closed and will keep recirculating the coolant in the engine block until it warms up sufficiently. Then the temperature of the warm coolant will cause the thermostat to open the channel to the radiator to get rid of excess heat, which should stop the coolant from over heating. So the effect of the thermostat keeps the coolant at a fairly stable temperature. When the coolant runs low, it can't transfer enough heat to the radiator and the coolant and engine then over heats. Watch for radiator leaks under your car after you have been driving it. If the coolant goes low again fairly quickly you could have a leak in a hose or the radiator itself.

if our engine run at 82 celcius there no reason its start boiling when you turn it off its normal for temp to raise when you turn off the engine but to start boilling thats mean our temp is higher then 84 degre check our gauge manuelly check the temp with a thermometer directly in the radiator and compare with the gauge that mean the faster you go colder its get so the radiator does its job but what weird it goes up at lower speed so not enought air goes trough the radiator are you missing a front spoiller that redirect the air to the radiator if you raise the boots you gonna have to raise the cooling capaciter of the car check it out let me no. . pierre

If you locate the water expansion tank (front of the bonnet, opened, with the pressure-cap to top-up if necessary) - check that there's sufficient coolant in there (check whilst the engine is cold).

If so, you may be suffering the same problem as a lot of RX8 owners, with a dodgy coolant level sensor in the tank. One way to confirm this is to remove the connector to the tank - on the left-hand side of the tank as you look from the front (not the air-conditioning connector, immediately to the left of it, attached to an aluminium billet). Ensure the (now free-hanging) connector from the wiring loom is safely stowed and give it a test drive. If you're satisified that the warning goes away then you know that the level sensor in the tank is faulty (and therefore the warning light is spurious). Unfortunately, that's a pricey item to replace (dealer price, UK, in the region of £200).

Remember, leaving the coolant sensor unplugged to avoid the spurious warnings would mean that a genuine problem that resulted in (catestrophic) loss of coolant would then go undetected, until too late. So do this at your peril.

sounds like the head or head gasket is blown. your cylinders may be getting coolant in them which will not only cause the motor to lockup, but also cause bent rods and valves. check your oil dipstick and transmission dipstick to see if it looks like water or coolant is presant, also check the coolant to see if it smells like gas or has any kind of oil in it, if so, your head is likely blown.

SOURCE: 2003 Protege 5 overheating on long runs.

I just replaced the radiator and thermostat on my 03. The radiator was defective (corroded) on the lip where the cap seals. This allowed coolant to be spat out. The thermostat was also sticking closed after new radiator and this caused overheating. Replace both while in there for under $100 if doing it yourself.

This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.
A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
you have all ready replaced the thermostat with the proper temperature opening thermostat(hopefully) and coolant sensor, you say you have to refill the coolant every 2 weeks this indicates that you either have a coolant leak that needs to be checked out and repaired or you are burning coolant which indicates a possible head gasket problem which will have to be checked. a low coolant level will set this code as there is not enough coolant in the engine to get the engine to operating temperature and stay there. these last suggestions is where I would start to look.

Why wont a/c clutch stay engaged


You dont have enough refrigerant in it. Go to wal-mart and by a recharge hose and a can of freon, If you do not have any leaks, and system is ok. Then by adding the proper amount of freon, should keep the a/c clutch from recycling. Good-Day! It will tell the proper way to fill it on the guage for the freon.

Sounds like there is air trapped in the system. On a COLD engine, remove the radiator cap, and check the level. If it's low, slowly add coolant until the rad is filled right to the top, then cap it. Top up coolant overflow bottle if required. Start the engine. As the engine reaches operating temperature, the coolant level in the overflow bottle should rise. If it doesn't, it means that all the air is not yet 'burped' out of the system. Provided that the radiator cap is good, and that the coolant level is maintained at the proper level, the system should eventually expel all the air. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Fuel guage & water guage are not working properly the fuel guage reads ful then will go to empty after you drive it for awile - the water guage only goes up to a quater


The gas tank sending unit has a float on it to register the amount of gas in the tank. The float is probably faulty which will cause erratic readings and is a fairly common issue with some GM units. Replacement of the sending unit should resolve that issue. As far as the coolant temperature gauge, it could be a faulty temperature sending unit or a thermostat that is stuck open or someone removed the thermostat. This will cause the engine to never reach operating temperature which in turn makes the engine run rich and can clog cat. converters and destroy some sensors.

Temperature gauge does not go up but car is overheating


The engine block is probably so low on water that the water doesn't get to the temperature probe. The only thing that is effecting the termperature sensor is the air inside the block. You need to refill the system with water. A car cooling system is constantly heating and cooling. Your radiator cap has a pressure release valve. The valve can get weak and let water out the overflow when it's not suppose to and can be part of the problem As the engine warms the coolant expands and the excess goes into the makeup tank. As the engine cools it sucks it from the makeup tank back into the engine. This is all done through the hose near the radiator cap. The amount of coolant you've lost could be caused by a leak in the system or in the water pump. When the engine is cold you should remove the radiator cap and refill the system with water. Also fill the makeup tank to the maximum level indicator. After you have filled the system then start the car and watch the guage and see if you're overheating. You may have to replace the thermostat which controls the coolant temperature. If you still get no temperature or if the coolant level wasn't low then you may have to change the temperature sensor.

No heat is often a symptom of low coolant, usually followed by overheat. There are other controls that regulate heater, but right now, re-fill the cooling system with engine running and heater on high, then check for leaks (coolant you lost went somewhere...you need to determine where) Low coolant will damage your engine. Take care of that first, then if heater still does not work, then do diagnosis on that. (if you loose the engine heat won't matter, will it!)
