When the check engine light comes on the transmission goes in to third gear and won't go in overdrive or any other gear. I stop turn engine off restart it the check engine light will go out and the transmission will shift normal. I seem to only get it to do this after it gets driven for a while it has never done it when the car is cold.
I had the same problem with my Elantra 2001 GLS two years go. What I had to do was to replace O2 sensor (I think there were couple of them - one was busted).
Dealer will probably read their own code and find which sensor but that costs a lot.

First, change your transmission fluid and filter while the engine and tranny are hot(to get out particles that may be jamming the overdrive gear)! Next, check to see if the overdrive motor is running when you flip it to overdrive. If not...change the overdrive motor.
the overdrive is the 4th gear. considering that it may not be an issue with your computer switching gears to fourth but an issue with the transmission itself. this light could be a signal instead of and engine warning light where the engine is fine but the transmission isnt.
i have a 90 chevy 2500 2wd 350ci.when i go to start my truck the key turns hard in the ignition, the check engine light and brake light come on the heater dont work, and the transmission will shift from 1-2 at real high rpm and shift hard,no 3-od.this comes and goes, but all happens at the same time.some times it last for 10 min, sometimes its days.what is going on?
It might be the reason why the check engine light come on. And all i can say is you need to scan your can and pull the code and bring it back to see whats wrong because it maybe some to do with Transmission shift solenoids usually when they get stuck open or close a code gets stored in the ECM. Good luck
Lexus's have a complicated system of electronics that control the function of the transmission.Under normal operating conditions the transmission is controlled by the ecu and by a secondary system called a drivetrain control module. usually when a fault occurs it sends a code to the ecu and the check engine light comes on.
If this light does not come on then typically the electronic modulator is at fault and needs to be replaced.
If the check engine light comes on when the vehicle is hot i need this code to guide u further for the repair.
If u want to attempt the repair , be wary. its messy and takes time to do to do it right.
