Excessive wear on frame where lower control arm attaches

The section of frame where the lower control arm bolts on (cast aluminum?) has excessive wear; Is this a 'critical' problem? Is strong and intact where the large bolt holding the lower control arm goes through. Is there a replacement part for this front-end frame attachment?

If your sure its stout It should be ok my? is what caused it has to be some thing louse or bent.

You need to loosen the torsion bar adjusting bolts until all the tension is removed, remember to mark a reference point from bar to frame so you can get close to the correct riding height after reassembly. Can't tell if you split the ball joint from the knuckle from your explanation but a couple of good solid whacks to the lower knuckle will unlock it. Mark & remove the control arm bushing bolts and use a pry bar to push out arm @ bushings.

What tools are needed to chang rear cv joint in a 2002 mercury mountaineer


Basic tools..remove wheel, remove axle nut, remove brake caliper, remove lower control arm bolts,remove the bolt for upper control arm, remove the outer tie rod bolt, support vehicle and suspension, the hardest part is getting the axle out of the rear diff, sometimes a simple pry bar will pop it out, but I've run into a lot where you either need the special pickle fork or even have to remove the complete rear diff with axle still attached, remove cover and take out c clip.if you continue prying and hammering between inner cv joint and diff, you will cause damage to diff.the cv joint is steel, cast maybe, and diff is aluminum so guess what will be damaged first? That'll lead into a pretty expensive repair.the special tool to remove axle is 205-529

Control arm removal


Take the wheel off, secure strut to lower frame with a strong piece of rope, place a jack under the sway bar, jack up slightly, that will hold the strut from lowering anymore via the link from the sway arm to the strut (reason for the rope securing the strut is it will swing out towards you when the lower control arm is removed), saturate all the bolts with a good penatrating oil [Liquid Wrench = Good Stuff] remove the nut from the lower ball joint stud, spray on more penatrating oil where stud goes through spindle, hit the spindle with a good size hammer where the ball joint stud goes through the spindle (always hit what it goes through), give it several hard sharp raps from the sides, then hit downward on the lower control arm with hammer, most of the time the stud will come right out, if not, put nut back on ball joint stud just until the stud is flush with the top of the nut, since you can not hit directly on the top of stud, get a good sized wrench to go across the stud and hit downward on either side of the wrench, holding other end with your other hand, if the ball joint does not come out now, hit the spindle from the sides some more HARD, then hit downward on control arm, if it still does not come loose you will have to get (or rent) a spreader (Pickle Fork) to separate the ball joint from the spindle, then remove the two bolts from the lower frame, slide lower control arm out.

Check the backlash in bearing shaft direction and the axle hub deviation. Maximum for backlash should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm) and for axle hub deviation 0.020 in. (0.05mm).

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear tire and wheel assembly Rear stabilizer link Rear axle shaft nut Rear disc brake caliper and disc Speed sensor Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub No. 1 and 2 upper control arm assembly No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly Toe control link Rear axle from hub assembly using a plastic hammer No. 2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector using a screwdriver 4 bolts and rear axle hub and bearing assembly from the axle carrier assembly

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) No. 2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector using a screwdriver Rear axle into hub assembly No. 1 and 2 upper control arm assembly. Torque the new nut to the No. 2 rear upper control arm to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Temporarily tighten the No. 1 arm bolt. No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly. Temporarily tighten. Toe control link. Torque new nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Rear stabilizer link. Torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub Rear speed sensor Rear axle shaft nut. Torque to 214 ft. Lbs. (290 Nm) and stake the nut with a chisel and hammer. Rear brake disc and disc brake caliper
  2. Adjust the parking brake.
  3. Stabilize the suspension as follows :
    1. Install the wheel(s).
    2. Lower the vehicle and bounce it up and down several times to stabilize the rear suspension.
    3. Raise the vehicle.
    4. Remove the wheel.
    5. Jack up the rear lower suspension armplacing a wood block in between. Apply a load to the suspension so that the lower suspension arm is plkaced in a horizontal position.

  4. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear upper control arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).
  5. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear suspension arm assembly to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6. Fully tighten the No. 2 rear suspension arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).

    Rear tire and wheel assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE If it is necessary to replace the hub or bearing, replace the components as an assembly.


    Rear tire and wheel assembly If equipped with rear disc brakes, the caliper mounting bolts. Leave the brake line connected and suspend the assembly out of the way. Brake rotor or drum 4 bolts and pull off the rear axle hub O-ring

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) Rotor or drum Caliper, f equipped with rear disc brakes and tighten the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) Wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Rear wheel(s) Height control sensor link from the lower control arm Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness Brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier by removing the 2 bolts. Support the caliper with a piece of wire. Brake rotor Parking brake shoes and cable Cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the rear axle Suspension member brace by removing the 2 bolts Halfshaft bolts and washers Halfshaft from the vehicle Strut rod
  4. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body for the No. 1 control arm.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam Nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm Separate the control arm from the axle carrier No. 1 lower control arm Stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  6. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm Nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier No. 2 control arm from the vehicle Nut and bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly 2 upper control arm set nuts and bolts Axle carrier with the upper control arm
  8. Secure the axle carrier in a vise.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier and remove the control arm Dust deflector. Use a suitable prytool. Oil seal

  10. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and shift the backing the plate towards the hub side (outside).
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New bearing to the axle housing Snapring to the axle carrier, using snapring pliers New outer oil seal. Coat the oil seal lip with multipurpose grease.

Bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the axle carrier. Tighten to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm) Parking brake shoes and cable Outboard joint side of the halfshaft and align the matchmarks on the side gear shaft and the halfshaft. Coat the threads with clean oil and install the hexagon bolts. Tighten bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm). Suspension member brace with the 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Nut to hold the halfshaft to the rear axle. Tighten the nut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm). Lock cap and cotter pin Brake disc to the axle hub with the matchmarks aligned. Install the 2 screws and tighten the screws to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Brake caliper to the vehicle and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm). ABS speed sensor and wiring harness Height control sensor link with the matchmarks aligned. Tighten the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Rear wheel(s) Negative battery cable

  2. Lower the vehicle and turn ON the air suspension switch.

  3. Press the hub out of the wheel bearing, then remove the backing plate.
  4. Remove the snapring, then press the wheel bearing out of the axle carrier.

To install:

NOTE Use a new toe control link nut for assembly.
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Backing plate bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) No. 1 lower suspension arm bolt: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) No. 2 lower suspension arm bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) Toe control link nut: 36 ft. lbs. Stabilizer Bar

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the 2 nuts and left stabilizer bar link. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (5 mm) to hold the stud. Repeat for the right side.
  3. Remove the 8 bolts, 2 No. 1 brackets and 2 bushings. Two types of bolts are used, so make sure the correct bolts are installed.
  4. Remove the stabilizer bar.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2. Install the bushing and bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Install the bushing to the inner side of the bushing stopper on the stabilizer bar.
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Repeat for the right side.
  4. Install the rear wheels.
  5. Inspect and adjust rear wheel alignment.

  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION Do NOT remove the center nut to the strut at this time. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury.

How to replace ball joints


the lower ball joint is pressed into the lower control arm. You will need a ball joint press to remove and install the ball joint. The other option is to replace the lower control arm.

Some parts store will have presses for loan. You will have to check around and see if any in your area have these. If you can't find one you could always pull the control arm and bring it to a shop or machine shop and have them swap the ball joint.

Its a pretty simple procedure.

1. remove the wheel
2. remove the pinch bolt that secures the knuckle to the ball joint.
3. separate the lower control arm from the knuckle.
4. remove snap ring from the ball joint (if it has one)
5. use a ball joint press to press out the old ball joint.
6. press in the new ball joint.

if you don't have a press than you can remove the lower control arm by following steps 1-3 above. then remove the bolt from the front bushing. Remove the stamped steel skid pan from the sub frame. Remove the rear lower control arm bushing mounting bolts.

Typically these are replaced with a complete lower control arm. What happens is the ball joint is reseeding the lower control arm and rusts. When the old ones pressed out it distorts the opening in the lower control arm. When the new one is pressed in they never fit tight. Anew lower control arm is very easy to replace. 1. Jack up the vehicle on the sub frame or pinch weld. 2. Remove the pinch bolt that holds the ball joint to the knuckle. 3. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle. 4. Remove the two bolts that secure the horizontal bushing to the sub frame. 5. Remove the single bolt that secures the vertical bushing from the subframe. 6. Remove the lower control arm. How to fix a ball joint in a ford tempo


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The lower ball joint is integral to the lower control assembly and cannot be serviced individually. Any movement of the lower ball joint detected as a result of inspection requires replacement of the lower control arm assembly.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the nut and bolt securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  4. Remove the nut and bolt securing the control arm to the vehicle sub frame. To install:
  5. Install the control arm assembly to the vehicle sub-frame using the nut and bolt. Tighten the nut to 69-86 ft. lbs. (93-117 Nm).
  6. Install the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle and secure it with the nut and bolt. Tighten the nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-59 Nm).
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  8. Road test the vehicle.

Found this article for you. Hope this helps

The ball joint is integrated into the lower control arm and cannot be replaced separately.
In many ways, that makes this project a lot less complicated (especially compared to the Taurus / Sable ;))

Before getting started, be sure to get an illustration of the front suspension - the linked Autozone Repair Guide is a good source.

Describing the scene & cast of parts:
  • The control arm connects to the frame with 1 large bolt/nut through a bushing on one end.

  • The other end has the ball joint stud sticking up that connects to the bottom end of the steering knuckle.

  • There's one more part involved: lower arm strut.
  • ** 1996-1998: This 'bar' connects to the middle of the control arm, and angles back and connects to the frame on the other.
    • 1999-2003: the end of the strut connects to the 'extension' coming off the control arm.

Removal Procedures:
Preliminaries: jack the car up, use a jack stand, chock the wheels, take the front wheel off - leave the key in the ignition so the steering wheel is unlocked.
  1. Remove the lower arm strut nut and dished washer from the end that goes through the middle of the control arm.

    NOTE: take notice of which way the dishing of the washer is pointing - you'll want to remember that for reassembly.

  2. Remove the 'pinch' bolt from the bottom of the steering knuckle that holds the ball joint stud in place - punch it all the way out of the knuckle.

  3. To make separating the control arm from the knuckle easier, you can use a small pry bar, or other handy tool to open up the 'pinch' point around the ball joint stud.

  4. I use a good length of 2x2 to leverage the control arm down - separating the ball joint stud from the knuckle.

  5. Last step - remove the control arm-to-frame bolt - and wiggle control arm off the end of the arm strut.

  6. Sit back and have a cup of coffee - 1/2 way there...

Installation:
  1. Put the end of the arm strut through the the control arm connecting point (middle for or control arm extension - model year dependent)

  2. Reattach control arm to frame - torque bolt to 85-97 ft lbs

  3. Ball joint stud to steering knuckle -

    * A second pair of hands really come in handy for this part
    * Line up the stud to the same angle as the opening in the bottom of the steering knuckle
    * I usually reach for the 2x2 to lever the control arm down far enough to get the stud lined-up and back into the steering knuckle

  4. Insert ball joint pinch bolt -

    NOTE: Don't start hammering the bolt back through the hole! There's a groove in the ball joint stud that must be lined up in the bolt hole - may have to tap the control arm up / down to get it "just right". Bolt slides in a whole lot easier then.
    Torque bolt to 46-52 ft lbs

  5. Reinstall strut washer & nut - this is where you were supposed to remember which way the washer 'dishing' was pointing!
    Torque to 85-97 ft lbs
Don't forget to put the wheel back on, and drop the van back to the ground.

Removal & Installation Independent Front Suspension – 2WD Vehicles To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper shock absorber nut, retainer and grommet
    • Lower nuts and shock absorber
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower retainer and grommet on the shock absorber stud and insert shock absorber through frame bracket hole
    • Lower nuts
      1. Torque to: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
    • Upper grommet, retainer and new nut (or existing nut with Mopar Lock N Seal or Loctiti 242) on the shock absorber stud
      1. Torque to: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
  2. Remove support from lower control arm outboard end.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
Independent Front Suspension – 4WD Vehicles To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: dod_ram15_02-04_4wd_shock.gif

    • Upper shock nut with insulator and retainer
    • Lower shock bolt
    • Shock absorber
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Upper part of shock absorber into frame bracket with insulators and retainers and nut
      1. Torque to: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
    • Lower part of shock absorber into lower control arm with the bolt
      1. Torque to: 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm)
  2. Remove support from lower control arm.
  3. Install tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
Link/Coil Front Suspension To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Nut, retainer, and grommet from upper stud in engine compartment dod_ram15_02-04_shock.gif

    • Nuts from upper shock bracket
  3. Lower bolt from axle bracket and shock absorber from engine compartment
To Install:
  1. Position lower retainer and grommet on upper stud and insert the shock through the spring from the engine compartment.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower bolt
      1. Torque to: 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm)
    • Upper shock bracket and nuts
      1. Torque to: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    • Upper grommet, retainer and upper shock absorber nut
      1. Torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)

How do I install a 1980 buick regal upper control arm


You will need to have a coil spring compressor to do this.

Remove the wheel, and coil spring,

Support the lower control arm on a strong jack support

Use a ball joint splitter to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle

Remove the two nuts from the control arm that goes to the bolts through the frame

Remove the control arm

Reverse this proceedure to reinstall
