Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

My 96 ford taurus revs high when starting then works it way from 1500 or more down to 800 but fluctuates from 800 to a little over 1000. When putting car in rverse or drive from park engine revs up to 1500. Recently car has had problem accelerating when coming to a stop. The rpms go down and jump up causingcausing the car to lurch forward. The car cut out twice on hivhway when slowing down around 45mph_55mph and immidiately kicked back on. Has died at stop sign and light a couple of times but starts back up and drives fine aside from problem. Recently cleaned aic valve and problem seemed to stop but 7 days later it is starting to idle poorly and occasionly rev high when vehicle is almost stopped. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You need to clean the IAC again and also the throttle valve and bore, use only CRC brand Throttle body cleaner. After they are thoroughly cleaned disconnect the battery for 5 min's and then drive the car in varying condition for a few days. If that doesn't cure the issue you have more serious problems and will need a scan tool to look into the readings from the MAF, TPS and ECT sensors. High idle cold start is normal then slowly dropping after a few minutes. I assume you never had a check engine light. Correct?

the idle air control valve is responsible for engine idle.
this is a common failure on ford's. but I don't think yours is bad because it does idle high befor it dies.
you stated you had codes p0171 and p0174 these are lean codes for bank one and two, you said you found a vacuum leak and repaired it, the vacuum leak was mostly likely the cause of the lean codes, however the pcm has calibrated the fueling stategy for this lean mixture, what you need to do is erase the KAM "keep alive memory" this is done by unhooking the negative battery cable for 60 seconds, this is the only way to erase the KAM the $6000.00 machine I use wont even do it.

once the KAM is clean the computer will go into a relearn state and all operating values will be adjusted for the vehicles current condition, during this relearn session the vehicle may have some driveability issues (low or high idle, stalling, poor fuel economy) the relearn should complete within 10 minutes of idling and then 10 minutes of driving.

Cars are design to run at a higher idle at start up to warm them up quick. There is a sensor that reads water temperature and tells your car's computer how fast to idle. Your RPMs seem slightly high but not out of the norm. Does idle ever drop to around 600/800 after about a minute? If not, your engine temperature sensor maybe defective.

If you do not have a scanner try Autozone, Oreillys, or Advance autoparts. They will scan for free.

Check your water sensors for the Cold start routine. You should have 2 things there for the Temperature, 1 for the water gauge and the second works the Cold start. Now if the Cold start routine is not getting a reading of the engine warming up, it will not cancel and will stay at high idle.

You also may have a weak thermostat. You do not have to exceed the specs with too hot a thermostat, just one that is working. Sometimes a difference of 10 degrees is enough to keep the phases from clicking in when they are suppose to.

With over 200,000 miles you must have put in 1 or 2 parts by now. It should not take you too long to fix this. I hope my solution is helpful to you.

Hi i have a 96 Taurus GL with a Transmission that does not work i can put it through all gears and wont move unless you rev it up hi it well move slowly but it well move back words if you rev it a little....


Have you checked the level of the transmission oil ? The level does not have to be down much to encounter the type pf problem you are having. With the oil warm and the engine idling in neutral, the Transmission dipstick should show the level between the low and full marks.

I got a 1990 ford ranger 2.9 v6 its running very crappy


Fluctuating an high RPMs sounds like a leaking or missing vaccume hose to me, I had simmilar problem found open hole with hose off, replaced it now the RPMs are under 1000 again.
As for the stalling I also am having a simmilar problem, and am finding air in the fuel rail, I suspect the fuel pump is going.
I cant go more than a mile without problems.
