The thermostat is located where the lower radiator hose goes into the engine. I've had to replace mine, and it took a while to find it. I found the easiest way to get at it is to remove the power steering pump (hoses attached) and set it over to the side to get at the bolts on the thermostat housing.

The change over from mechanical to electronic took place at about the time of your model. If it is the mechanical type the cable comes out at the rear of the gearbox extension and will have a mechanical speedo cable attached to it. The electronic version has a cluster on the side of the transfer box and will be coupled by electrical wires. Take care, there are evidently two different mechanical gears in use, make sure you get the right one if yours is one of these.
