Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu with about 135391 miles. I seem to be having an electrical problem. This started with just dimming my lights (interior and exterior) when I would step on the brake. It didn't do this all the time. Well now not only will it do this occasionally but now it is also randomly has trouble starting. It always starts but sometimes it takes a little longer than normal, cranking for about 5 seconds before turning over. While it is cranking all of my gauges jump to the center an start shaking. Then when the vehicle starts the whole instrument cluster shuts off for about 2 seconds then returns to normal. Now today when I got in my car it started normally, but all of the settings on my radio were reset like my battery had been disconnected. Any ideas?

Well I just replace the alternator this weekend because the bearing was going bad. I've also just this weekend replaced the tensioner assembly and harmonic balancer.

Most partstores will test battery altenator and starter for free. Either your battery is dead or your connections are not metal to metal contact, or you starter relay may be shot. You can put key in on position and either test with a voltmeter or use a screwdriver and jump terminals on solenoid to see if starter turns.

Did you got the fuel pressure checked. As you say it sometimes not starting and sometimes starting, this indicates that fuel pump is bit weak, its not letting fuel to the engine.Try spraying starter fluid to the throttle body and then see is it starting with starter fluid. When you face the no start problem like this at that time spray the starter fluid and see if its starting up right. If it starts then its fuel pump and filter issue. The pump is loosing its pressure.-------------But if the same no start problem with starter fluid too, then it can be air filter blocked issue or transmission trans-axle issue or shift bezel issue or it can be low tire pressure issue.----------

In a way it has a fail switch, the shut down was triggered by a program in the computer. I would suspect the thermostat stuck closed, suggest you replace it.

It sounds like the alternator isn't working. If the battery voltage gets below 10.8volts it starts to shut systems down, like engine computer, fuel injectors, electrical loads(lights) etc. Get your alternator tested or replaced. Also make sure you battrey connections are clean and tight. If they are loose the alternator can't replenish the battery power due to excessive resistence in the cables.

The interior lights of my 99 chevy malibu do not work. Can this be a fuse problem?

yes it can be a fuse, most cars have a dimmer for dash/interior lights if fuse is ok it may be the dimmer switch.

I have a 2000 chevy malibu, battery light came on

check your serpentine belt it sounds like it may have stretched or broken. Without the belt working properly your car will overheat due to the waterpump not activating and neither will the power steering or alternator
