Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

I have a 97 pontiac grand prix with a 3800 v6 non cupercharged engine. Service engine light came on so i changed spark plugs and wires with oem parts. Now it is hesitating and running rough with service engine light soon stays on. Used diferent fuel and put in some lucas brand cleaner to clean out the injectors, but hasnt helped. What could the problem be and how can i fix it?

Sounds like you messed up the fireing order. Check to make sure the order is correct. And did you gap the plugs correctly? If the check engine light came on and the engine was still running good then it most likeley was a oxygen sensor tripping it. 3.8 are usually very good motors. Good luck, hope this helped.

You need to read the codes. Get an OBD2 code scanner from your local auto parts store,, then read the code stored. Then you will have a better idea what is going on.

Removing Plug Wires from '02 Pontiac Grand Prix, 3.8 Liter V6

often times the connection inside the plug boot gets corroded and it's almost impossible to remove the wires with out damage. when this happens I gennerally replace the wires anyway this saves you problems in the long run . the sparkplug wire removalk pliers are a good investment however they are only as good if the boots themselves are not siezed up on the plugs. I have had this happen alot over the 20 years i been working on vehicles. I usually just twist and pull on the boots till they come off and not worry about damaging them because they should get replaced anyway the new plug wires have a antiseize lubricant to keep from this happening in the future

The engines are the same dimensions and use the same mounts, but the wiring and sensors are a bit different and you need the computer and gauge cluster out of the supercharged car.

How old are the spark plugs and wires. GM vehicles are great runners until something goes wrong with the typical spark or fuel delivery issues. Wires or fouled plugs may not set off the computer, it will just run crappy.
