Question about Mitsubishi Eclipse

Fuel Trim Malfunction Bank 1 and 2!

Mitsubishi eclipse gt 3.0l V6. Did a tune up awhile ago and since then my car started to idle poorly.When parked and in neutral, the engine revs up and down when at engine temperature. The scanner gave faulty codes P0170 and P0173. I replaced MAF sensor thinking it could be that but the problem still persists. HELP!!!

Bank lean left and right, right?

I had this on a different vehicle, but the problem and repair might be similar. It was on a friend's Explorer.

Engine codes showed both banks lean, and I think the codes were even the same numbers. Everything I found said MAF, which you've changed already. There was also info about injectors, but leave that for later.

What I found, and may be the problem here, is a vacuum leak. On that vehicle, I found one hose that I replaced. I also changed the fuel filter. Have you done that yet? I changed the fuel filter, and when I dumped the fuel out of it, it started clear, but quickly started pouring nasty, black, dirty fuel out the inlet side of the filter. It's possible that the filter was clogged enough to reduce flow and cause a lean condition.

The other thing was that vacuum line. Up and down at idle could be the heating and cooling cycle of the broken hose affecting the amount of air getting in the hole.

How to find vacuum leaks:
I've always been told to start at one end of a vacuum system and move forward from there. With the engine running, spray some WD-40 progressively along the lines. You're listening for a change in the idle of the engine. The WD40 will get into the crack and momentarily block the air thru the crack. When the engine changes, focus on that area of the line. The change could be small and quick, so pay close attention and go slow. Respray if you're not sure. There may be more than one area that needs attention, but hopefully it's something readily apparent.

If this is a V6 model, Bank 1 would indicate one side of the motor. Also, if it's the V6 model, I believe there are 3 O2 sensors, one per Bank, and one downstream(post-cat). If it is the V6 model, and it indeed is Bank 1, then just replace the O2 sensor, that's the most likely cause.

The up and down idle kind of sounds like a vacuum leak. Did you have to remove the plenum to replace the rear plugs? Have you checked for a vacuum leak? What kind of plugs did you put in it?

Car has rough idle in drive or reverse with foot on brake and will occasionally act up while in park


Fuel Trim below Zero- your taking away fuel,
above zero your adding fuel

Should be plus or minus 2 or 3

You may have a rich condition from leaking injectors,
thus the -20

Mail them away to Ultra Sonic Cleaning

Check Fuel Pressure

2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, I came to a stop and my car would just rev when I pressed the gas. Noticed my neutral light blink, Car won't move in drive or reverse just rev. help please!


This just happened to my 02 eclipse gt automatic on Thanksgiving 2012 . Its ur torque converter , the torque converter engages forward and reverse drive... Sorry to say but u need a transmission rebuild.... I just swapped mine to a 5 speed for around $2000

Hi, your Eclipse is like Mitsubishi 380 V6. Bank 1 Exhaust is toward the radiator & sensor 2 would be attached to the exhaust pipe after your Catalytic converter. That is the second Oxygen Sensor on the front exhaust pipe which would be under the motor toward the muffler.
You can take a look at your exhaust pipe right it before it goes into your catalytic converter. Thats the approximate location of a great many o 2 sensors

Error code P0173Pd when check engine light comes on


Looked up the code. Means fuel trim malfunction bank 2. Switch your o2 sensors out and see what happens. If the code changes to p0171, then the o2 sensor is bad. If it doesn't, you need to check for misfires or exhaust leaks. Google 'fuel trim malfunction bank 2' for more info.
