I have a 2005 Subaru Forrester. While driving the engine light and cruise control light go on. This is second event. What is causing it? The last time this was checked out, we were told it was low oil. We had the oil changed - lights went out - but, we are not at the 3,000 mile number for an oil change. No oil is burning, and none on garage floor. Could it be the catalytic converter?

It probably is the converter. The check engine light has nothing to do with maintenance at all, nor does it really directly concern the engine. The check engine light comes on for emmission purposes. Such as converter, loose gas cap and all kinds of sensors.

Subaru Owner's Forum shows many similar problems. Another solution when the blinking cruise and CEL are on with a P0420 code is to install a spacer between the O2 sensor and the bung - a
$2 fix.

2005 Subaru Outback. Trip odometer suddenly said Err 55, cruise control started flashing, ABS lit up, and check engine light had come on. I noticed a day later that the regular odometer had frozen,

I found this under Fixya; 2006 Subaru Outback; there were 25 answers: The problem is not with an emission issue as you would expect with a check engine light. The ER 55 code on the odometer means that there is a loss of communication with the ECU, that is why the check engine light is on and cruise light flashing. for what ever reason whenever your check engine light comes on the cruise becomes disabled. Lame I know. I work in the service department and have seen this issue a lot. The only real way to fix this issue is to go the dealer and have them do a reflash for your vehicle. If the ECU is bad it is covered under the federal emmission wrty for 8 years or 80,000 miles

Cruise control light failure

Your light bulb is burned out. You will have to take the dash apart to get to it. You can check to see if it come on by taking your key from off to the run postion, all the lights should come on for a second or two and then go off with the exception of a few. If it does not come on then, your bulb is blown.

CEL, flashing cruise control and vehicle dynamics controll OFF lights on Subaru Tribeca

It is safe to drive your car. What happened was you have a Check engine light on indicating a problem with the emission diagnostic system. This also makes your cruise not work, and the light to blink. Take your car to your dealer at your convienence and have them diagnose it.
