Capless gas tank causing check engine light. Cleaned had dealer reset 1 week later back on.

1st of all never bring it to a dealer--mechanics generally don\'t have experience--they don\'t pay enough for the good guys. It probably needs a new module or sensor-running a data stream with factory tools by a good shop works. And it\'s best to use new parts with electronics.

Make sure you replaced the right one there are two sensor's for the coolant, one takes coolant temp and the other one runs the fans for the radiator. Both are located on drivers side of the block. 2 wire leads on each how ever both are different in sending readings to the computer.Both look just alike also. Just make sure you replaced the right one. Or replace both.

only way to clear is with a scanner. The scanner will also give you the codes so it can be diagnosed. If its an emission issue your warrenty should cover it.

Now, in the past year, when I fill the gas tank, I can smell gas fumes inside the car (remember, it's a wagon).
I have a lot of customers that run into this problem and get the same answers from the dealers.
Given the age of the car and that it has been in a accident, here is what I would look for first.
1. First, because of the accident I would look to see if all the work was performed properly around the gas tank. Check the filler neck to make sure that all hoses and clamps are tight and in good shape, if cracked or it has any bad spots in it, replace it. The tech. that repaired the car could have missed something by accident; this is always a good place to start with by double-checking the work that was done.
2. I've had the Fuel Pump replaced twice due to recall. Another possibility, when they installed the fuel pump they may not have put the seal in right or it could have slipped. There is usually a rubber ring that goes between the tank and the pump and it might have moved during installation. When you fill the tank to the top it may come out because the seal slipped out of position.
3. I'm not sure on this model but on a lot of the newer cars they have been mounting the charcoal canister in the quarter panel next to the fuel neck but it may be hidden behind a plastic cover. The charcoal canister may have been damaged from the accident or it could just be defective and when you fill the tank up it may be going into the canister and fumes are coming from it or gas may be leaking out of it.
4. I have found that some of my customers have been over filling the tank trying to put as much as they can squeeze into the tank, this is not a good idea. When it gets hot outside, the gas expands and has no where to go except into the canister or lines of the canister, this system is not meant to handle gas, it is only meant to handle fumes. You will smell gas if you try to over fill the tank. When you fill it at the station you should let it click off. Just try rounding it off to the fifty cent mark, (example: $10.03 only go to $10.50 not $11.00) this will help you to keep from over filling the tank and neck of the tank. Over filling the tank can clause damage to the canister and components in this emission system.
These are things that the average person with some mechanical knowledge can check out on their own. After this point, it will usually have to be looked into by a fully qualified tech. with good trouble shooting skills that can follow the flowcharts to find the problem.

Where is the inertia switch reset


It depends on the error code(s) being reported. A very common one (P0457) is that the engine computer thinks the gas cap is loose. The gas filler neck often develops rust holes which cause this code, fix is repair usually quite easy, or replace. There are many other error codes. Look around your area for a Subaru shop other than the dealer. Your problem fix may much simpler and cheaper than the dealer, who often give the most expensive, worst case, repair options.

P0172 fault code


It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

2001 toyota 4runner< engine light on, code comes out to be - p0441 auto zone said change gas cap, i did, 2 weeks later light comes on again< what do you think?


You can get this code if you don't tighten the gas cap all the way, or the gas cap is bad. I will put all the detail for the code below and what I would do to fix the problem...

NOTE: Do not top off your tank either. This could cause the 'overfill check valve' to fail, and could cause this code.

Definition of P0441: Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect
Purge Flow

Detection logic:
DTCs P0441 and P0446 are recorded by the ECM when evaporative emissions leak from the emissions components
or when there is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for
pressure switching valve, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself.
detection cause: Pressure in charcoal canister and fuel tank does not drop or
drop in pressure increased beyond the specified limit during
purge control (2 trip detection logic)

What I would do:
1. Replace fuel cap and reset computer. If code returns, then proceed to next

The next steps require a diagram, so the purchase of service manual to locate the components is very helpful

2. Check for vacuum leaks in ALL emission hoses
3. Check VSV valve operation (there are three; they are ~$75 new from dealer, and sometimes fail)
4. Check for cracks or leaks around or in the charcoal canister (usually requires a smoke machine)
5. check for voltage to VSV's
6. Last resort: take it to the dealer and have them run a diagnosis. This should run between $50-$100.

My guess is you have a leak either in the fuel tank itself or in the plumbing from the cap down to the tank. Have you ever been in a wreck?

When fueling the vehicle, do you see any gas leaking out under the vehicle?

Does the area where the gas cap screws in have any damage that would allow a leak to occur?

Another area to look at is the system that recycles gas fumes back to the gas tank.

Something is not allowing the tank to hold pressure.

you were told your vehicle has small/large evap leak detected? The leak could be coming from any number of components. Fuel tank seal, evap purge valve, check valve. The best way is to find the leak with a smoke machine. It is designed to find leaks in the evap system. There is a port with a green cap in the engine compartment. This is where the hose from the machine attaches to. Turn machine on. Where ever you see smoke, this is where the leak is.

These lights come on for several reasons, but often in relation to air fuel mixture. First, if you recently filled the tank, go back and unscrew and re screw your gas cap until it ratchets . If you are low on fuel, fill the tank with premium and see if the light goes out over a day or so.. If it all goes out you are fortunate.

If you continue to see the light, have a dealer or qualified tech, scope the car and reset the lite In all likelyhood you will need one of 3 sensors.
For my money I would ask the dealer to reset and give you the info identifying if it is sensor 1 , 2 or 3 and point out where it sits.Then just buy the part and install. The sensors are like changing a spark plug. They are visible but EXPENSIVE.
The other possibility is you might have a dirty throttle valve needing some carb spray inside where the snorkle hose attaches from the air cleaner to the throttle itself.
Again the dealer should identify the cause unless you have tester for the ECU.You dont want to replace the wrong sensors because a friend said that was THE one he did.
Mine was the front, right near the rad, but I know the mechanic and he is a friend who showed me the readouts and the test procedure while he worked.
I had previously cleaned my throttle valve and still had to replace to sensor 3 weeks later, but my fuel economy spiked when it was done.

Check engine light keeps coming on replaced gas cap already


Your problem is in the evaporative emission system which is designed to prevent the escape of fuel vapors from the fuel system. Leaks in the system, even small ones, can allow fuel vapors to escape into the atmosphere. The light coming on can be caused by one of the following:

1. Defective or loose fuel cap
2. EVAP canister or hose cracked- not connected
3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
4. Vacuum leak at engine Government regulations require on-board testing to make sure that the evaporative (EVAP) system is functioning properly. The leak detection system tests for EVAP system leaks and blockage. It also performs self-diagnostics. You have tried the easy fix, the gas cap. Finding the leak now will require special equipment and testing procedures, might be better left to a professional.
