Battery not charging

I recently had a drive belt go out on my camaro, v6 3.8L engine. I replaced the belt but the battery is not charging. The car was driven, following t he belt change, about 15 miles by my son. The check guage light came on and it sounds like he was losing power as he drove the car according to the battery gauge. he managed to get the car home but now it needs to be jumped to start up and it doesn't keep running. I checked the belt routing diagram and it looks correct. Do you suspect the belt was not put on properly or could the battery have just gone bad? The battery was purchased 9/06.

Thanks, I think the suggestion about the alternator is a good one. I do think it is a bit of a coincidence that the alternator might suddenly be bad or have loose connections given the problem with the belt. Could the old, busted belt, which part of it was wrapped around the alternator, caused the problems you are suggesting?

If the belt is routed properly I would check the tightness of that belt and then get the car to an Autozone or similar and have them check that the alternator is charging the battery and that the battery is holding the charge.

Was driving, car seemed to be running fine, then it died. put it in neutral and tried to restart, got nothing. after letting it sit for several hours, tried to restart. I get a click. engine won't turn...

What's likely happened is that your alternator has failed. When that happens the battery runs the vehicle 'till it has nothing left. When it sits for a time, chemical action in the battery gives you a small amount of extra voltage but not enough to me meaningful.
Re charge the battery and check the alternator output. Running it should be no less than 12.9 volts and no more than 14v. With all accessories on the voltage should remain steady and not drop over time. Also check that the belt tensioner is not weak and allowing the belt to slip. (alternator uses about 5 horsepower to turn and a loose belt will not allow that to happen without slipping)

About 2 years ago battery was not holding a charge. changed the battery first but had to replace the alternator. a new problem started recently while driving the battery will lose its charge and the engine...

If you have a voltmeter check the voltage at the battery with the motor running. It should be about 14- 14.5 volts. If not the alternator is bad.
Sorry, hope this helps.

Having trouble starting car. The battery is fine since lights still come on. Found a shredded belt. Not sure if it's the alternator belt. Appreciate the help. Marcia

Don't drive the car until you make sure the belt that is shredded is not the water pump belt. YOU could drive but the engine will overheat and have a more costly problem. Two things, if the lights are working but the car is not starting. It could be that the terminals are dirty on the battery AND if the belt that is shredded is the Alternator belt, the battery could be just down on charge. Do to things (1) Find out which belt needs to be replaced and have it replaced. (2) Charge the battery, maybe a friend has a charger, if so have them trickle charge the batter for at least 12 hrs. Less there's some other problem that should take care of it.
