Noise in 2004 Ford Mustang V-6, Manual Transmission

There is a loud humming/whining noise coming from the back of the car, possibly the right side. This occurs when the gas pedal is pressed, but not when the clutch is engaged or the car is in neutral. It is increasing louder in 3rd and 4th gear and becomes slightly more quiet in 5th. This has been going on for about a week. We had the transmission fluid changed because we were told that was the problem, but there has been no change. Today the car is almost undrivable because the back right wheel feels wobbly and won't drive straight. There does not seem to be any play in this wheel. The car has 44,000 miles. Please advise. Thanks so much.

It turns out that it is not the wheel bearings making the noise, but the differential pinion bearings. Thanks for your help to get us pointed in the right direction.

The noise your hearing could be the bearings in your wheel hub, when the bearings go bad they tend to make a squeeling noise. Your tire is attached to the wheel hub if its bad it could cause the tire to feel wobbly. Good luck.

Check the rear suspension bushs for looseness wheel could be pulling to and fro when under power. The noise is probably due to the rubber bush completly disintegrated and the axle to body insulation has gone making the body a big megaphone

Update: Differential shop says all components appear to be in good condition, ring and pinion pattern good, no metal in fluid. Slight noise audible, apparently not differential in origin.

I'm having the same exact problem as cpurdey with my 2004 Mazda MPV. My mechanic is quite certain it is not the wheel bearing or hub but seems to think it's a bearing in the transmission. Is...

If it gets worse as you're turning right, but not left - Most definitely a wheel bearing on the right side. The right turn puts more stress on the right wheel - louder noise - turn left and release the stress - no noise. You can also lift the vehicle up on a jack and listen to the wheel and hear the bearing in the hub making noise.

When I put my 2004 ford into 4x4 the left front starts to hum or whine like something is rotating free. It sounds like something is not connecting. I changed the actuator on the same side last year.

I would check to maek sure that your lock out hub didnt brerak off. My 2005 for f250 did that last year to me but on my right side. It sounded like a humming noise and got loude as i wen faser. After several weeks of tolleraing It I tore it apart and foind tha the hub was not releasing after putting it in 4 wheel drive. So my passenger side was locked in bu my drive side unlocked. I would try that as a first step. Itt should only be 3 tiny bolts on the hub itself. Mine are held on by 3 allen wrench head syle bolts. Hope this helps.
