like a piece of metal vibrating in the engine. The sound is there on all gears except 5th gear, in 5th gear it only happens when I do not have my foot on the accelerator

  • Amit K Mar 11, 2009

yes, all gears except 5th gear while accelerating or when foot on accelerator, on 5th gear when foot off the accelerator

  • Amit K Mar 11, 2009

No I don't, only when the RPM goes over 2000, if I shift the gear before it touches 2000 RPM, there is no noise.

So this happens when the vehicle is in motion?

Okay, can you hear any noise while sitting in park?

    This may be the problem:

There are worn constant velocity joints(CV joints) or Universal joints (U-joints)

The differential unit may be worn and may have too much backlash

I would take it to, say, AAMCO or a reputable transmission shop. I know AAMCO does a free inspection on tranny's and will not perform maintenance or repairs without talking to you first. This would be my best advice.

Toyota corolla problems

After checking the easy stuff first like low oil level, if it is high RPM(revs) & shifts hard(lurch when it does shift) then I am thinking the transmission filter & oil need to be changed. The transmission filter acts as a suction screen on an automatic transmission & as it collects contaminants to protect the inner workings of the transmission, it becomes plugged which greatly affects the ability to shift especially the high gears at faster acceleration.

Transmission

There are two types of transmissions in 1991 Toyota Corolla. Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission.
1. Manual Transmission:
The transmission oil is checked through a level bolt which is provided to the left CV joint side in the middle of transmission. To check the oil level, park the car on a level floor, remove the level bolt with 22 mm or 24 mm spanner. If the oil starts coming out of this hole the oil level is considered OK. If not, top up the oil till it starts coming out and tighten the bolt. The recommended manual transmission oil grade is 75W/ 90W and total capacity is 2.4 Litres.

2. Automatic Transmission:
Warm up the engine, park the car on level floor, pull up the hand brake, gear lever stick in P, keep the engine start, let the radiator fan come on, take the auto-transmission stick out, wipe it with a clean dust free cloth, insert it in, again take it out, keep the stick in horizontal position and check the oil level. At operating temperature the auto-transmission oil level should be at upper level (Hot). If not, add oil to mach the mark. The recommended auto-transmission oil is Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron II, and total (drain and refill) capacity is 1.4 Litres.

Tapping/ticking noise when rpm goes above 2000 with check oil warning on my chevrolet lumina ls 2005 model

You will have to take an oil pressure reading and compare to specifications. It could be that the pick up screen is plugged. Do not drive the car as damage to engine will occur.

With the engine off turn the key to on. Then turn the key just past on, but before the starter starts. This should turn all the dash indicator lights on.

2005 Toyota Corolla with 36,000 miles Transmission now "jumps" into gears

hi,
when the check engine light comes on, your car goes into a mode where instead of everything being normal, things are forced, to try and compensate for something else being wrong. It most likely does need a new timing belt, and a complete tuneup INCLUDING plugs and wires. we have a 1984 toyota corolla and it purrs like ground rice, I suggest the tuneup to continue proper rice production.
