2000 cherokee xj liftgate won't open

I posted earlier and got a response saying to take off the interior panel on the liftgate, but there are screws on the sides that cannot be accessed while the liftgate is shut. Any help much appreciated.

The lock will still lock and unlock. Almost seems as though the door handle is malfunctioning. Which side panel are you referring to? (It is not power locks)

Does anyone know if you replace the outside handle will it fix this problem, sounds like this is a common occurance with this car as I have the same problem.

sometimes you need to sacrifice panel to get to the lock mechanism. generally you can locate one in a scrapyard. Have you tried activating lock from the connector inside the side panel? or are there screws you can't get to there as well?

If ur not tooo rough with the panel you can just tear the panel at the side screws, you will never even know its torn. There are two on each side one up high and one down low, and the top 4 are completely accessable, I just did this and it works like a champ!

If not power locks, the only way I know of to get in there is to go through the panel. If you are completely unable to open it, that's the only way!!! There are enough jeeps in the boneyards so that availabiltiy of the panel should be good and you may even be able to match colour. Since this is not a "running" problem, you can take your time finding one you want. In removal, I always try what you might call careful destruction, in that I dont go at it with hammers etc. this ensures that no internal damage is done. Sometimes making a small hole and enlarging it 'till you can gain access to lock mechanism is all you need to do. There is a lot of sheet metal behind the plastic panel, so after cutting in one location, try to enlarge hole towards an access hole in the inside panel. Use care when reaching through the hole...Inner sheet metal is sharp and can give you a bad cut if not careful!!!
hope this helps!

Is the liftgate truly locked, or will it just not open when you pull the liftgate handle from the outside? Mine will unlock, but sometimes I need to push somewhat on the liftgate at the handle before the mechanism will release.

Need to fix door on expedition liftgate won't open

In this case it is usually necessary to remove the interior panels of the liftgate to gain access to the linkage inside. The only problem is: removal of those panels is much more difficult with the liftgate closed. Take to a professional, or risk breaking the attachment points of your panels, and associated fasteners. I usually charge around 50 to 100 dollars to get these open, then an additional charge for further work to repair the lock, latch, or linkage.

Have you tried holding in the plastic trim that surrounds the liftgate handle, with one hand, while pulling on the liftgate handle, to try and open the liftgate? I've seen this happen on a few Grand Cherokees and that should get it to open. Just make sure you hit the power unlock switch before trying that.

How to open liftgate taht is locked its venture 2000, the key wont open. is there any manual way to open the liftgate that is locked from inside ?

there are 2 ways, one is you can use a dent puller and pull the lock out of the tailgate and use a slot screw driver to open the door,be aware that you could do a little damage around were the lock assembly is but it can be fixed.the other is to remove the interior door panel to get to the inner assembly and open it from inside the door panel.be aware that its a 2000 car and plastic components dry out and crack when pulling on them.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. The overhead panel says liftgate open but it isnt. I have tightened and oiled everything I can see on the liftgate. No results. Help

There is a switch, most likely built into the latch, that tells the body control module when the liftgate is open or closed. If that fails what you experience will happen. An open / shorted wire or bad BCM or overhead panel will also cause the "liftgate open" indicator to be on. Try and locate the switch and look for obvious damage.

2000 jeep grand cherokee rear liftgate won't unlock, but will lock with switch

Does it make a horrible noise when you try to unlock it? If it does then you have to remove the interior paneling on the lift gate and replace the "actuator" i found one at a junk yard for about $40 and once you get the paneling off it only takes one screw and the connector. really simple and cheep. Hope this helps.

the fuse will be in the under hood fuse panel, the problem that you are having is most likely one of the latches on the liftgate.

Liftgate emergency release cannot be found

2/3 of the way down this page with pictures

http://www.wjjeeps.com/liftgate.htm

All WJs feature an emergency unlock/lock switch lever for the liftgate. Should the liftgate become locked and unable to be opened due to a switch or circuit failure, a manual unlock/lock lever is accessible behind a small panel on the interior trim panel. As shown in the photos above, the lever can be moved up or down to unlock or lock the liftgate door.

Interior lights wont go off, the computer is saying the liftgate is open when its not...i disconnected the liftgate and computer still says its open....the fuses and relays are fine

Check input circuit from liftgate switch to body computer. If circuit is open with switch dis-connected, check output circuit from body computer. You will need a wiring diagram, if circiut is powered with switch dis-connected, replace body computer.
