If the steering wheel is being pulled to the side (like maybe up against a curb) it could cause the keyswitch to be VERY difficult to turn. Try even pressure on the keyswitch while you work the wheel from side to side.

Most cases it will be the steering lock doing that, especially if you are turning the wheel at the same time that you kill the engine since the wheels will kick back after they lose power. just jiggle the wheel back and forth a bit and it should unlock the tumbler. also i would recommend using liquid graphite in the ignition instead of silicone spray as the graphite will eventually dry and lubricate the tumbler that way.

You need to replace the ignition switch.  Any auto shop will have these,  First DC your batter and wait 10 minutes.  To replace the switch, just remove the plastic cover from your steering wheel.  By the ignition switch there is a lockpin that needs to be pushed through.  This will make your ignition switch slide out, in order to be replaced.  btw.  I had a friend that had a toyota do this and he pressed the clutch all the way to the floor, jiggled the steering wheel, and jiggled the key and it worked.  Please, do this at your own risk.

I put the keys in ignition, but switch wont turn to start car: as if switch is locked

Sometimes the cause of this is the steering wheel is turned to the left or right when you shut the engine off and it holds pressure against the steering lock mechanism. Try turning the steering wheel hard to the left or right while trying to turn the key and see if that solves your problem.

Key will not turn 2005 toyota corolla

try holding the steering wheel hard over to the left, then turn the key. still not working? turn hard over to the right, turn the key. still not working? spray WD40 or whatever lube you have laying around in the ignition, just a wee bit. work the key in and out of the ignition. Still no work? Try one of your back up keys.

My key wont turn in the ingnition of my 1998 toyota avalon

Hi, the problem you could be having is with the steering lock, if this has locked in a funny position it can be hard to get it to unlock.

what you need to do is when you put the key in try turning the steering wheel left and right as far as it will go whilst turning the key to on position, now its going to be hard to move so you will need to use some force turning the wheel try turning it left whilst turning the key forwards and backwards and the same turning right, once the steering wheel has moved this should allow the key to turn and you will be able to start you car.

let me know if it fails to work then i can assist you further ok

plz rate this solution as i have got a whole page of posts that have gone unrated, thanks

1996 camry le 6 cylinder. cannot get ignition key to turn to start car. gear is in park and have tried adjusting steering wheel

Hi the steering lock could be causing you the problem try turning the steering wheel hard left whilst turning the key and do the same hard right.

it may be hard to turn but you should find once you have moved it slightly it will unlock allowing you to turn the key so dont adjust the steering wheel turn it to the right as if your trying to turn to the right and if this dont let the key turn turn the wheel to the left it only needs to move slightly to allow the steering lock to free the key,

doing the above should solve you problem

give me a shout back if you have any further problems ok

The ignition key is stuck in my 2001 Toyota Corolla

The ignition on Toyota cars sometimes requires you to push the key down into the keyhole while turning it towards the 'LOCK' position.

If you have trouble moving it to this position, you can try turning the steering wheel at the same time, or jiggling the wheel left and right.

In case you are still unable to remove the key, you may have a defective ignition key cylinder, and this may need replacement.

Hope this helps.
