there is a number of reasons your check engine light is on. Your car is equipped with a self diagnostic system . There is also codes that your engine will display on a tester to tell you what is wrong. But when the check engine light comes on it is telling you its time to put it in a garage and find the problem and fix it.
If you had it checked out the Mechanic should have hooked up a OBD II scanner to receive the Trouble Diagnostic Codes to it. The codes will reveal why your Check Engine light is on and how to fix it. You can go to your local Autozone store and they can read your codes for free and let you know what the problem is. The Traction light being on is all related to the Trouble Code you have. Once you fix the problem both lights will turn off.
Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' (Service Engine Soon) light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on.
You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE the problem and perhaps eventually fix the problem.
If your check engine light is on or flashing, take your vehicle to a local auto parts store (or your mechanic) and request a diagnostic test to be done (if available). This will bring up any codes for any parts or components on your vechicle that need replaced or repaired. (NOTE: not all parts will come up by code) However, in most cases, if the check engine light is on, then chances are you'll see a code for whatever is wrong (may be a few codes that show up) -- this test is usually a free service, very useful, and only takes 5-10 minutes.

55 No Malfunctions -I have a dodge shadow that puts this code out just to let you know that the computer is working correctly. It is more of a self test code. If you didn't get this code, then there was something wrong with the self diagnostics.
