Question about 1997 Mercury Sable

Reset the fuel pump shut off switch ,the fan belt snap while driving now the car will not start. have replace four pars and the car is not fireing

2001 dodge status isnt firing. turns over but wont start. is there a fuel pump reset switch?


What engine?

I assume you checked for fuel pressure and have none?

There is no switch to reset. Ford is the only one that uses this.

If you have not checked for fuel pressure or for spark here is some info to get you in the right direction.

The six cylinder (2.7 LITER) has a common issue with the distributor. Pretty simple to figure out. Check for spark. If there is no spark than replace the distributor.

You may also want to check to see if the timing belt is broken. On the 6 cylinder you can pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor spins while you crank the engine over. If it does not spin your timing belt is likely broken.

On the four cylinder you can take a few of the bolts off from the upper timing cover and watch the timing belt while the engine cranks over to see if it is moving.

What if the fan belt break while driving


Dan h described what would happen if your timing belt/chain broke.. fortunately the consiquences aren't as dire if your SERPENTINE belt snaps. Most vehicles have the following systems or devices powered by the front engine accessory drive belt (FEAD belt)
AC compressor
Power steering pump
Alternator
Fan (some vehicles do and some don't)
Water pump

All but one of these things can be lived without, at least for a short time. If your belt snaps and your water pump stops your engine will overheat in no time flat., say you're cruising through a rural area and your belt snaps a mile and a half away from the next town, your car will get you there, but you had better turn it off once you get into town. After a belt snaps you've got 2 miles before you absolutely need to shut your car down to avoid damage.

2001 ford focus was shut off and would not start so I replaced the timing belt using the bar and pin checked spark ok, fuel to the rail have compression but still not start ??? help


If you replaced a timing belt on a ZETEC engine, and got it right,you have mechanical ability.
My shop manual shows four pages of instructions on replacing that belt.
Assuming you have it timed properly, then it should start.
Did you make sure the fuel pump inertia switch didn't trip on it? Can you hear the fuel pump whirring momentarily when you turn it to ON'?

Fan belt snapped on my renault express diesel changed that but now it now it turns over but wont fire up


check the belt is on correctly if it is it will be tight and around all pulleys,make sure around fuel pump pulley. Also ask yourself why belt snapped in first place was it old/cracked and due to break or did a pulley sieze and cause belt to squeel and burn then snap.

Replacing water pump


This is for the 3.9 v6 you did not specify motor size.

The water pump can be removed and installed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped).
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse.
WARNING: CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS ARE USED ON MOST COOLING SYSTEM HOSES. WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING, USE ONLY TOOLS DESIGNED FOR SERVICING THIS TYPE OF CLAMP, SUCH AS SPECIAL CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER 6094). SNAP-ON CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER HPC-20) MAY BE USED FOR LARGER CLAMPS. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING CONSTANT TENSION CLAMPS.

CAUTION: A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.


  1. Remove upper radiator hose clamp and hose at radiator.
Fan Blade And Viscous Fan Drive-3.9L/5.2L/5.9L Engines 81898572


  1. The thermal viscous fan drive is attached (threaded) to the water pump hub shaft. Remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from water pump by turning mounting nut counterclockwise as viewed from front. Threads on viscous fan drive are RIGHT HAND. A Snap-On 36 MM Fan Wrench (number SP346 from Snap-On Cummins Diesel Tool Set number 2017DSP) can be used. Place a bar or screwdriver between water pump pulley bolts to prevent pulley from rotating. Do not attempt to remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle at this time.
  2. If water pump is being replaced, do not unbolt fan blade assembly from thermal viscous fan drive.
  3. Remove fan shroud attaching hardware (two bolts at bottom-two clips at top).
  4. Remove fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle as a complete unit.
  5. After removing fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly, do not place thermal viscous fan drive in horizontal position. If stored horizontally, silicone fluid in viscous fan drive could drain into its bearing assembly and contaminate lubricant.
  6. Do not remove water pump pulley bolts at this time.
Automatic Belt Tensioner Assembly-3.9L/5.2L/5.9L Engines 81898573


  1. Remove accessory drive belt as follows: The drive belt is equipped with a spring loaded automatic tensioner. Relax tension from belt by rotating tensioner clockwise (as viewed from front). When all belt tension has been relaxed, remove accessory drive belt.
  2. Remove four water pump pulley-to-water pump hub bolts and remove pulley from vehicle.
  3. Remove lower radiator hose clamp and remove lower hose at water pump.
  4. Remove heater hose clamp and heater hose from heater hose coolant return tube.
Coolant Return Tube-3.9L/5.2L/5.9L Engines-Typical 81898574


  1. Loosen heater hose coolant return tube mounting bolt and remove tube from water pump. Discard the old tube O-ring.
Water Pump Bolts-3.9L/5.2L/5.9L Engines 81898575


  1. Remove seven water pump mounting bolts.
  2. Loosen clamp at water pump end of bypass hose. Slip bypass hose from water pump while removing pump from vehicle. Discard old gasket.
CAUTION: Do not pry water pump at timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.

Replaced timing belt engine will not start


check for spark at the sparkplugs, and listen to hear the fuel pump going when key is turned on. if no pump noise and no spark it can be the auto shutdown relay located on the drivers side fender behind battery. the auto shut down shuts off power to the ignition and fuel pump if the timing belt snaps. ,,,, if you have spark and fuel pump works then check firing order on plug wires , if they are in right place then check timing , if timing belt was replaced without lining up the timing marks it wont run

When your tmming belt went dint that bend the valves.Do a comprestion test firstly.As this is a interferance engine.when the belt snaps the likely of valve to piston contact is very likely.Also change the camshaft sensor.

Have spark,no fire,sprayed starter fluid into throtle body but does not start


Turn key forward listen for the fuel pump to pressurize if you don't here anything then your fuel pump needs replaced and it's in the tank.
