I have a 1996 potiac grand am that will start but then shuts offs. I keep getting a lot of information about turning the key in the on postion for a couple of minutes. I have tried this several times. Car still will not stay started. Is there some way that I can disconnect the anti theft system so that my car can keep running. I dont have the money to take my car to a dealer. If any one could help me figure this out please help.

Re: anti theft THINK i AM STEALING MY CAR
Try this. PASS LOCK RESET GM CARS 1999 UP 1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

Turn key on wait for all dashboard lights to appear / light up - turn key off then repeat this 5 times . finally start car / run a few minutes - turn off this will reset factory security . Or Disconnect battery positive then leave it for 30 min. - reconnect and start car . A whole lot of info about Bypassing GM passkey ll anti - theft is on google . The computer chip wears out etc. It was A Really Useless Idea invented By Overpriced suit & Ties . Best security ever is Big Dog in front passenger seat . Good Luck .
you should have the fuel pressure tested with a gage as if its too low it will not start.without the gage you won`t know the what the pressure actually is.also if you have anti-theft on the car it may have been activated not allowing the car to start.
it probably is just take your car to chevy dealership to have fixed for free. there was a recall about five years ago fixing the problem. problem was it was the anti theft system was catching cavaliers on fire blowing every fuse from the steering wheel all the way to the motor like mine did lol. so fix asap
Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do.
30-Minute Learn Procedure
1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes.
The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK
Turn the Ignition Switch OFF.
The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on
the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition
OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code
7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100
Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.
Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help
this is easy fix i had same thing happen when you start your car and it dies don't touch your key for no less than 11 min then turn it to off for no less than 30 sec the book says you might have to repeat this 4 times it worked the first time for me
Your car has pass lock I, this is an easy fix. Simply attempt to start the car. The theft light will come on and may flash. Leave the key on after you try to start it for about 10 mintues. IF indeed it is a passlock I issues it will relearn and start up after 10minutes. If at anytime the key is turned back off after the intial start, the process must be restarted. Pass lock allows fuel to make it to the injectors and then pulse enough to get engine RPM to around 800 and then shuts the off injectors not the fuel pump. Let me know how you make out.
