Thanks Mikey....I will definitely try that today. To give a little more background, the jeep was stuck and I had to put it in 4 low to get out. Now it is stuck in 4 low. It seems the shifter will move but the truck is still stuck in the lower granny gears. You wouldn't want to drive it on the hwy like that....I never heard anything pop or break when I was trying to unstick it. Also, it has an automatic transmission, not sure if that makes a difference. Do you think the shift fork inside the transfer case broke or maybe a pin slid out on the shift rod? I'm like you, other than the almost has to be internal. Do you agree? Oh, is the vehicle supposed to roll if the tranny and the transfer case are both in neutral? Mine won't...the wheels are still locked or something...Is there a plate I can remove externally so I have visibility of the inside gears? just to take a look?

Try going in reverse while shifting the t-case to 2wd. Other than the linkage falling off, the problem could be in the t-case itself. Check the oil level on the t-case by removing the upper plug(there are two plugs, one is the lower drain and the upper is the fill). The fluid level is when the fluid is level with the bottom of the hole. The jeep takes auto trans. fluid in there.

If the shifter moves and it still feels like it's in low gear then
something had to break on the linkage or internally. When I worked for
jeep, we did have problems with the fork pads in the t-case. If the
fork pads are worn, you will not get the right movement.

The 4 wheel drive on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee

The ticking noise is most likely your tranfer case chain. the chains in this case...overtime....will stretch, causing the chain to have enough slack the hit the bottom of the case.

Check fluid in transfer case, make sure it's full and clean. Lube all external linkage and make sure it's adjusted correctly. Chances are there's a bit of wear in t-case components. When this happens sometimes rolling shifts are easier on unit.

These transfer cases do not have plastic pumps. Do have the transfer case looked at by Jeep tech, it could be as simple as an adjustment on the lever.
