95 Cavalier wont start without a jump after replacing starter

Clutch went out in my moms 95 Cavalier. My boyfriend replaced with new clutch(very mechanicaly inclined BTW). A few days later, attempted to start, and the starter kept engaging itself, and the car wouldnt shut off, even with the key out of the ignition, we had to disconnect the battery cable. So my father bought a new starter, which him and my boyfriend replaced. A few days later, it did the same thing(engaging itself, wouldnt shut off). So they found the starter relay was burnt up. Replaced that.

Now, the car sounds fine when starting, but the battery will not hold a charge. The car will drive around fine for hours, but once it is shut off, it will not start again without being jumped, even if its attemtped to start 2 seconds after shutting it off. The battery, alternator, and starter all test okay on the volt meter.

Any suggestions on what the problem can be?? A few people suggested burnt wire and or a wire not being grounded correctly somewhere, but my boyfriend has followed all of the wires, and cant find a problem.

Please help!

Loosen the battery cable.... start the car with a boost.... after it is running... unhook the battery.... if it dies... replace the alternator... if it keeps running... replace the battery.... make sure this is done outside and everyone working on the car is wearing safety glasses

Car will not turn over but all the lights work

there is a switch that prevents the starter from engaging at certain times. (stick shift wont work without clutch pushed all the way down) (automatic wont work unless in park or neutral). ensure that clutch is pressed or transmission fully in park. the switch could also be bad, but is easy to replace.

Ther is a switch either on the floor or on the clutch pedal that wears out ....it is to prevent car from starting without clutch pedal being depressed...should be simple two wire connection and ea easy replacement....I have tested them by jumping the two wires to see if car starts,,,though you should have car in neutral and park brake on to be safe....good luck...Lee

Where is the starter solonoid located 04 aveo

You will need to verify if the starter solenoid is getting power when you are attempting to crank it. I dont have a diagram, but the clutch switch may be the problem if you must depress the clutch to start the engine.

Clutch pedal, starter, ignition... where is the safety relay for the clutch pedal depression to allow start? 1994 Jeep YJ 4.0 this has happened twice

If you find the switch, you can temporarily jump across it, 'till you get a new one. When you go to buy it you are looking for a clutch switch.
Neutral switches are found on automatic trans vehicles. If you jump it out, be VERY careful to make sure you start in neutral with the clutch depressed as without the switch, it will start in any gear even with the clutch engaged.

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone out. Take a service manual and follow the instructions on testing the ignition switch.

Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.
