2006 Malibu Maxx SS transmission /engine issue

Last month I was at a stop and the car would not move forward when I was in automatic and pressed on the gas. I limped the car home in manual 3rd gear worked but could not come to a stop since first would not work. Took it to the dealership 3weeks and 4K later my new transmission is now bolting forward when I put the car in drive and press on the gas. Returned to the dealership and they tell me its the 5th and 6th cylinder and I need a new engine. The car drives pretty good the rest of the time which makes me question that I need a new engine. I have 50K on the car. two sets of tires, two sets of brakes and the leather seats have splits in them and I dont have backseat passengers that ride back there.

Thanks Josh for the bitter sweet confirmation. A lesson learned that I will not purchase american ever again. And that I cannot trust a GM dealership not to send me to the poor house. This car has almost landed me in divorce since I live with Mr. Chevrolet ...Nascar, left turn sunday guy from mid west. I'm headed to KIA to purchase the new SOUL with 0%, great customer service, awesome warranty, 100K miles on their powertrain, I used to own a festiva back in the 90's and it was built by KIA - loved it the best car I have ever owned out of 15. Then I will bury the MAXX in the front yard, front end first and paint it like a tombstone.

Good afternoon and welcome to fixya
all right first of you you need to go and get a second opinion from another shop, i can tell you that you do not need another engine, sounds like a solenoid on the transmissionis not getting the proper pressure, these transmissions are very sensitive to fluid changes and pressures. i would take the vehicle to a well known transmission shop and not tell them that the dealership said you need a new engine. just tell them the problem your having and let them know that that is a new transmission, could just be fluid is a little low. good luck and let me know the outcome and ill try to help you more.

2006 Malibu Maxx SS transmission.Only drives in M and reverse.

It might have gone into safe mode but I would have expected safe mode to permit the vehicle only into low and reverse but your car might be different. Is the problem accompanied by dashboard lights staying on that did not stay on before. I would say that this is definitely one for a garage mechanic as , padricularly if dash lights are on, it would need diagnostic equopment to identify the problem

Good Luck

Knocking sound from engine.....sound like its from the fans in the front of engine

Grab the fan blade and move it forward and backwards. If it is hitting something it will be fairly loose. Also check wiring harnesses, they can come loose and hit the fan blade. After that start listening under the car. Bad bearings/rod knock.

We're having a popping sound in the steering in my 2006 malibu maxx hatchback ? Is there a recall . Please help

i just bought a 2005 malibu maxx from a dealership. It was having a popping sound when i would turn the wheel back and forth. Had the dealership fix it. THEY said they replaced the ( rack and pinion ) for the steering on the car. Don't think there is a recall on that. GM had a lot of problems with that popping noise on their malibu maxx. Hope that might help.

I cannot get the Change Oil Soon message to reset on a Pontiac G6

Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx 2004-06; 2006 HHR, Cobalt, Pontiac G6, Solstice
Turn ignition to run engine off. Display OIL LIFE RESET in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Press and hold the ENTER button for at least one second. An ACKNOWLEDGED’ display message will appear for three second or until the next button is pressed. This will tell you the system has been reset. Turn the key to OFF. If the “CHANGE ENGINE OIL” message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

2006 Malibu Maxx ss hard shifting/Check engine light

There is no dip stick. Its most likely not the fluid. These malibu's use the first generation GM LAN system. Check the data cord comming from the transmission near the mechanical shifting linkage. Alot of these shifting issues and errors are from a break in the wiring causing bad data to be sent/rvcd to/from the computer control module- these cars are electronically controled shifted, not mechanical.

Transmission fluid level

It is usually printed on the Transmission dipstick.
Engine warm, engine running, on level ground. Check level on dipstick, shoud be somewhere between add and full. Do not add oil if it is not below the add line.
