Radio does not turn on - red security light sometimes flashes

For no reason known to me the radio in my 2002 Jetta TDI turned off and would not turn back on. The red security light on the radio panel sometimes flashes but not always.

Any ideas?
What # fuse would possibly be the culprit? In door panel or trunk panel?

Thanks in advance!

I fixed it by removing the fuse and putting it back in. Works fine now.

    Thanks for your input anyway.

I unplugged fuse #42 like another view suggested. A few seconds later I plugged the fuse back in and the radio works fine. Mine never said "safe" it just wouldn't come on but I had the red blinking light flashing just under the on/off/volume control. I hope this works for you.

I had the same problem, the main plug in the back of the radio does not seat correctly, you have to buy the radio removal tools which are four "keys" you pop into the four corner slots of the radio, pull out the radio, unclip the main wire plug and re-clip it in... it'll work fine, however, its happened to me about 3 times in the 6 years I've owned the car, so keep those keys handy. Oh, and don't believe any dealer that'll tell you different, my dealer told me I needed a new $500 radio, and the radio removal tools were like $300.... I got them for like $20 on ebay.

is it the stock radio? fuse box is near the hood release, check the diagram on the inner side of the fuse box plate to find out which fuse it is. If not a stock radio there's probably a blown fuse behind your deck.

My 02 Jetta radio will not turn on... No safe

check the fuse on the back of the radio, i have seen these blow a couple of times. you have to remove the radio using the same tools as a ford style radio (the two prongs on each side).

microswitch in (most likely) the drivers door is sticky. very widely known issue. you can have the lock assy. replaced, or if you are a bit like MacGyver there is a $3 fix from radio shack, with some minor modification. Check out tdiclub.com and search the issue for a deailed instruction

The radio just turned off in my 02 vw jetts

This seems to be a common problem with this series of radio. If you open the drivers door and pop the fuse panel cover off the side of the dash, then locate fuse number 42 ( should be 25 amp). Remove the fuse, check to see if it is blown(it usually isn't), if it isn't blown leave it out for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then reinstall. Hope this helps it worked on my 02 Jetta TDI.
