If you have a garage around where you live, go there and ask if they can crack it open for you. They do have the tool(!). It should be noted that without that special tool you are not likely to "open up that lug. I would not even try, the tool is not that hard to get access to. Also, the manufacturer has tools like that available for purchase if you cannot find the old one
Just as a side note; I find it peculiar that the date of this question is 2009, and that this question is still posted and not removed (at least archived!)

You could try Grasping the lugs with a vice-grip, just to get them loose enough to turn by hand, if that doesn't work, most workshops have skeleton keys that should fit the lugs and they can loosen them for you. Hope that helps!

Is there a video on how to replace wheel studs on a 2006 Impala?

You may be farther ahead just putting a new hub assembly on it. If you'd rather not, once you get the rim off you can smack them a few good times with a hammer and knock the stripped ones out the back side and install new ones in reverse order.

I have lost wheel socket, so cant remove wheels, special stud in each wheel

If they are Factory Wheels Dealer should get you a key Socket. If they are After Market Wheels then depending on the exterior shape and size of the special Lug nut get a LUG NUT REMOVER SOCKET SET from a Auto part Store. Since you will have to use a Impact wrench best will be to go to a Professional Tire and Rim Installer and they usually have all kinds of Lug nut remover sockets.
Send me a clear picture and diameter of the lug nut to suggest further solutions.

I am wanting to replace the rear wheel studs that are broken. The wheel hub flange won't come off. Is there a special puller for this, do I need to apply more force or is there another method for removal?

You do not remove the wheel hub flange, just follow the procedure that I replied to earlier, and this is the procedure if you do not want to obtain a special tool for pressing the lug studs;

First you will have to pound the broken lug studs out of the wheel hub, then you will need a lug nut and about a half an inch thick of flat washers.

1. Insert the new lug stud through the wheel hub from behind so that the threaded end is facing out towards you and then put some grease on the threads.

2. Then slip the flat washers onto the lug stud followed by the lug nut, and run the lug nut down to take up the slack.

3. Then using a breaker bar tighten the lug nut until it pulls the lug stud through the wheel hub and it is flush with the wheel hub.

Be sure that the amount of flat washers used will make up for any non-threaded part of the lug stud that might stick out past the wheel hub preventing the lug nut from pulling the lug stud all the way through the wheel hub, and basically you do not want the lug nut to run out of threads before it can pull the lug stud flush with the wheel hub.

What wrench is needed to remove the 2002 GTI lug nuts?

they are the locking wheel nuts(lugs)and you will need a key(not a hex allen key)to remove them.if you look close you will see that the sides are not equal.
I use a nut spilitter or an old socket hammered onto the nut to remove it,means replacements but next time you buy a car check to make sure you have the radio code and the wheel nut key.

There is a lug on the tire that cannot be removed by the standard lug-wrench. What is the socket required to remove that one lug?

That is a special wrench that people usually keep in the glove compartment or another secure place. I keeps potential thieves from being able to steal the wheels unless they have the special wrench tool. If they are Mitsubishi wheels, check with the dealer or the brand name of the wheels on there if you don't have the special tool.

Good luck

Is there a special tool needed to take off the hub cap or is it just a regular one?

Hi :

Mercury sables had a couple different styles of wheels/ wheel covers, so basically if you have an alloy wheel with a center cap, you can remove that with a wide bladed screw driver in the slot that is on the edge. Same goes if your car has a full wheel cover. You can either use the flat tip of your tire lug nut wrench, or a very large screwdriver to pry it off of the wheel

I can't find the "key" or "star tool" to remove the wheel

Sounds like a previous owner replaced some of the lug nuts with security type which require a special adapter to fit the lug wrench.
A tire shop or the car dealer might be able to supply the adapter.

On our Mazda3 the special lug removal tool was in the glove box in a blister pack with spare lugs. After having the car serviced the tool dissapeared and after searching I found it in the lug removal vrench where the dealership mechanic left it. Hope this helps. Alex

You can get a wheel lock removal socket at NAPA or other part stores. This tool grabs ahold of the lug nut and removes them.
