I have a 96 grand cherokee that wont pull out in first gear

My jeep will only pull out in first if the selector is in first or secnd gear,if you put it in drive it will pull out in second gear every time.im told its the speed sensor but i dont know.also i replaced the tires and initially the wrong size was put on it but they were replaced with new the proper size and i hoped that would help fix it since it started doing this at the same time the tires were replaced with the wrong size.

Have codes checked . My first guess would be that the shift control module is not working properly, speed sensor could be out of range, and giving module incorrect info, but that's why there are tests.

96 jeep grand cherokee 5.2 want shift gears to about 4000 rpm

Check the T.V. Cable linkage at the tranny end. Make sure the return spring is pulling the linkage back on its own. I fixxed a 96 and an 02 shifting at 3000+ by spraying this linkage and cable with WD40 and working it back and forth untill it moved all the way to the peddle up position by its self. Parts were rusty and sticking when turned past a point.

Wont shift into park the whole way and not able to remove key because of this

My 1998 does this. It may be the cable from the Transmission Selector to the Steering Column. I have not yet "cured" this, but the work-around is:

When the key can't be removed, with engine still OFF, set Parking Brake, then pull Gear Selector Lever from PARK all the way back, then return it to PARK.

Your key should now come out slicker than deer guts.

Pretty Mickey Mouse, I know, but in this economy, I don't have $200 for the Jeep Stealer to adjust the cable.

No, not with out a lot of work. Electronics are most likely different on the 2 also.

96 grand jeep cherokee is jammed into park

the simple fix might be the park interlock cable. this locks the shifter unless you press and hold the brake pedal while selecting gears. I've seen and replaced a few of these on several chrysler/dodge vehicles.
