97 jetta won't start with key but will start when i jump starter.  i tried disconnectiing the alarm (thinking it was that) and  connected the starter wires ..still no start. so i'm now thinking that my key chip must have been knock out. the guy i bought it from said that when it happen i need to turn the key to the on position and mover the shifter from park to 1 several times and then try to start it. did that  (even thought it made no sense to me at the time) and still no start with key in ignition. any ideas?????

have you had any work done on the vehicle. And do you know if your alarm has a starter disable, if it does make sure your alarm is working

No...the started sylenoid is bad..change the whole starter (225 at autozone with a llt war) and you'll be good to go. They even test it for you when you get there. BUT WATCH OUT, WHEN YOU TAKE OUT THE BOTTOM BOLT, IT ALSO RUNS THROUGH THE TRANNY HOUSING, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A JACK UNDER THE TRANNY AND MOTOR UNTIL IT GOES BACK IN OR YOU WILL TAKE A WEEK TRYING TO GET THAT BOLT IN. LOL...GL

Have 97 vw jetta, disabled alarm how to get radio working

First on the driver side remove the panel where the drivers knees would be. when u do u will be able to see ur fuses and a bunch of wires. way up in the dash there will be 2 modules, one has a a 6 wire connector and one has a 10 wire connector, unplug them both, then ur alarm will be off but it kills your starter, to keep the starter workin connect the 5 and 6 wire from the 6 wire connector together.

This morning I came out to start my 96 jetta and the battery seemed dead. So I began the process of getting a jump and as soon as we connected the jumper cables to the jetta the alarm started going off. We...

The immobilizer feature was tripped when the alarm went off. It sounds like the battery was indeed dead. My Nissan 300ZX used to trip the alarm when I jump-started it, although my Audi A4 does not. When the alarm is going off, you have to disarm it with the key or key fob first, or you won't be able to start it. Try putting the key in the door, lock it, unlock it, lock it again, and unlock it again, just to make sure you get a couple of arm/disarm cycles, then try starting it.

Check, clean and tighten your battery posts, and the power connection to the starter and ground. Make certain the battery is good and charged, Perhaps you have a bad starter motor, or the engine is frozen (will not turn over). I think the ignition switch is okay, because your lights dim when you try to start. This indicates power is getting to the starter (at least some).

97 jetta wont start no power to starter

It could very well be your ignition switch may be damaged/need to be replaced. common problem 97's I have seen 3 like this so far. if you turn the key to lock the car and your alarm beeps to tell u it is active then its not the alarm and is very likely the ignition switch. you can cross the terminals to start the car until it is fixed. also be sure to check the relays and fuses as well.

97 VW Jetta won't start, no clicking

It might be starter wiring problem. Look for wire coming to the top part of the starter. One might be not tight enough or went off.
