Best way to refill is to put additive in first, then add fluid till full. If you can do this safely, run car with both rear wheels off the ground after filling and run through the gears. Make sure you do not try to go from foreward gears to reverse or park while wheels are spinning. When doing this vehicle should be on a lift or on very good jackstands with nothing in front of car for a good distance. Alternate method is to drive slowly putting little pressure on trans till gear shifts have been completed. After this, re-check unit for full.

Shifts hard at first (when tranny is cold) then seems to shift fine. Checked tranny fluid level and it was low by a few quarts. Could this have been the problem or am I in danger?

this may have been problem[low on fluid] may be time to change that trannny fluid and filter. if you choose to do this , i recommend that you add lucas tranny treatment to the fluid change also w/new tranny filter. this frees up any sticky valves in your tranny. allows smooth shifting, and works well wlth any fluid for fords/chevy's or jeeps. the lucas will eliminate the hard shifting, been there done that issue. also the hard down shifting you did'nt mention. although you may have not noticed. add the lucas and your hard shifting issues should be gone. thank you for choosing fixya.com

I am trying to change the transmission fluid in my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer.

This tranny has approximately 13 quarts of fluid. Just dropping the pan and replacing the filter will yield about 5 quarts or so, with the balance still sitting in the torque converter. I recommend just doing this instead of paying someone to power flush the system. There are debates whether or not this method will damage the tranny. When I did it, I got around 6-7 quarts out of it. Use GM's new transmission fluid Dextron VI. It's much better than the old stuff. GM starting putting the Dextron VI in 2009 and newer vehicles. Make sure you know what size your pan is, there is a shallow pan and a deep pan, the deep will have a step in it, the shallow will be completely flat.

There is another way to get rid of all the fluid, but it's very time consuming and difficult if you've never done one before. Involves disconnecting the transmission fluid cooler line at the radiator and having the pump inside the tranny pump out all the fluid for you.

What kind of fees should I expect for a transmission fluid and filter change for an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Well there is always 2 options; You can flush it which would be around $150-$250 depending on the shop, or you can do what we refer to as a spill and fill, the transmission pan is removed and the filter is changed, normally $100-$200. The flush removes all the the fluid in your transmission, and trans cooler (about 12 Quarts). The other option only removes about 4 quarts of the transmission fluid and is not very effective.

WHAT IS THE CAPACITY FOR 1996 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER AUTO TRANS WITH NEW FILTER

When your replace both the filter and fluid you'll only get to @ 4.5 quarts. Reason being I recommend changing the fluid, run it for a day or two and change the fluid again. This way you will be more incline to dilute out the old tranny fluid. Think of it as having a bucket of dirty water, if you dump out half and fill with good water you still have alot of dirt in there, if you were to dump it half way down again and refill you end up with cleaner fluid. If you do the filter alone with fluid you only get @ half of the fluid. It is cheap insurance as the Chrysler trans-axels are very touchy to the fluid quality.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Transmission not working when hot

well sounds pretty bad, did it start slipping before all of this and gradually get worst? anyways when this happens the cheapest diagnostic fix is pull all of the bolts on the bottom of the tranny to dran all the fluid, not sure if this tranny has a filter but pretty positive it does, pop a new filter in there you will see it when you you drop the pan, let all fluid drain and refill with the specific type of tranny fluid it calls from you can find the quanity and type from the auto store when you get the parts, substitute one of the quarts with lucas stop slip and hopefully it will bring the tranny out of it. otherwise your bands are shot and need a rebuild/tranny replacement. good luck and take care
