Question about 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK

Oil leak there is an oil leak on the drivers side of the engine just above the belt tensioner and looks like some type of cover with 2 torex bolts holding it. Is that a chain tensioner and is it safe to take that cover off, or just it just need to be tightened?

Hi,  The cover is an access cover for a measure oil pressure. It is safe to take off the cover is the engine is off. There might be a little oil flow out, but that is normal. Mercedes has an updated seal and cover for that problem.

Front seal replacement


Hi No Name, The most likely place of the leakage on your car is the front crankshaft oil seal. The oil pan (sump) is fitted with silicon from a tube as the gasket. It rarely leaks unless someone has broken the seal, which is difficult and usually needs a special tool for removal. To replace it you'll need to disconnect the battery, remove the PK (Serpentine) belt and the power steering pump belt and the front engine mounting (Front of the engine but fitted onto the side of the body) Next remove the crank shaft pulley, (a difficult part of the job, made easier if the starter motor is removed and a dog tooth tool is bolted into the most suitable starter motor attachment bolt holes, the dog tooth is used to lock the flywheel while removing the crankshaft bolt holding the pulley (which is torqued to 76 nm when re-fitting. Use a puller to remove the pulley from the crankshaft and then remove the ten mm bolts holding the two parts of the timing belt cover. Set the engine to T.D.C (Top Dead Center) and look for the match marks for re-timing the engine when refitting the timing belt. Once alignment has been achieved release the bolt holding the tensioner bearing and push it all the way open, releasing all tension from the timing belt and remove the timing belt. The oil seal can now be removed from its housing. Fit a replacement oil seal smearing a light coating of grease on the seal lip. Press evenly into place, making sure of an even flush fit. Replace the timing belt with a new belt, Re-align the belt so that the match marks align precisely to those on the gears by fitting and adjusting on the straight side of the belt. Once correctly fitted, gently release the tensioner bearing until it comes into full contact with the belt and hand tighten the fixing bolt and then loosen half one turn. Remove the dog tooth tool. Screw in the crankshaft pulley bolt and apply enough force to take up slack and tighten the tensioner. Remove the crankshaft bolt and then reassemble opposite to disassembly. Remember to refit the dog tooth for re-tightening the crankshaft bolt.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator belt.
  4. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the oil pressure switch.
  6. Remove the dipstick tube.
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8. Remove the timing belt cover plate, if equipped.
  9. Remove the timing belt cover bolts on the left, right, and center covers.
  10. Remove the timing belt covers.
  11. Remove the rubber cover seal. Clean all mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install a new timing belt cover seal.
  2. Install the timing belt covers on the engine using the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  3. Install the timing belt cover plate, if removed.
  4. Install the crankshaft pulley, and tighten the bolt to 69-76 ft. lbs. (93-103 Nm)
  5. Install the dipstick tube.
  6. Connect the electrical harness to the oil pressure switch.
  7. Install the water pump pulley and loosely install the mounting bolts.
  8. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension as necessary. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  9. Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Timing belt


TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o'clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

Ifailed to get on tdc before removing old timing belt how do I get back in time so Icanreplacebelt.


This is the complete procedure from the service manual on how to replace the timing belt start to finish, start over to assure u get it right, if u mess up the engine will be damaged

Removal for 1.6L engines : ONLY 2006 to 2009 CARS


Engine removal is not required for this procedure.

1.Remove the engine cover.

2.Remove the RH front wheel.

3.Remove the 2 bolts and RH side cover.

4.Temporarily loosen the water pump pulley bolts.

5.Remove the alternator drive belt

6.Remove the air conditioner compressor drive belt

7.Remove the power steering pump drive belt

8.Remove the 4 bolts and water pump pulley.

9.Remove the 4 bolts and

10.Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "T" of the timing belt cover. Check that the timing mark of camshaft sprocket is aligned with the timing mark of cylinder head cover. (No.1 cylinder compression TDC position)

11.Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley

12.Remove the crankshaft flange

13.Remove the 4 bolts and timing belt lower cover

14.Remove the timing belt tensioner and timing belt.

15.Remove the bolt and timing belt idler

16.Remove the crankshaft sprocket

17.Remove the cylinder head cover.

(1)Remove the wire harness bracket

(2)Remove the ignition coil.

(3)Remove the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) hose and the breather hose from the cylinder head cover

(4)Remove the engine cover bracket

(5)Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and then remove the cover and gasket.

18.Remove the camshaft sprocket.

Hold the portion of the camshaft with a hexagonal wrench, and remove the bolt with a wrench and remove the camshaft sprocket.

INSTALLATION:

1.Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt to the specified torque.

(1)Temporarily install the camshaft sprocket bolt

(2)Hold the portion of the camshaft with a hexagonal wrench, and tighten the bolt with a wrench
Tightening torque :78.5 ~ 98.1N.m (8.0 ~ 10.0kgf.m, 57.9 ~ 72.3lb-ft)



2.Install the cylinder head cover.

(1)Install the cylinder head cover and bolts
Tightening torque :7.8 ~ 9.8N.m (0.8 ~ 1.0kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 7.2lb-ft)

(2)Install the engine cover bracket

(3)Install the PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) hose and breather hose to the cylinder head cover.

(4)Install the ignition coil.

3.Install the crankshaft sprocket

4.Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket with the No.1 piston placed at top dead center and its compression stroke.

5.Install the idler pulley and tighten the bolt to the specified torque.

Tightening torque :42.2 ~ 53.9N.m (4.3 ~ 5.5kgf.m, 31.1 ~ 39.8lb-ft)

6.Temporarily install the timing belt tensioner

7.Install the belt so as not give slack at each center of shaft. Use the following order when installing timing belt.
Crankshaft sprocket →idler pulley →camshaft sprocket →timing belt tensioner

8.Adjust the timing belt tension.

(1)Loosen the tensioner pulley mounting bolt and apply tension to the timing belt.

(2)After checking the alignment between each sprocket and each timing belt tooth, tighten the mounting bolt and one by one.

Tightening torque :19.6 ~ 26.5N.m (2.0 ~ 2.7kgf.m, 14.5 ~ 19.5lb-ft)

(3)Then recheck the belt tension.
Verify that when the tensioner and the tension side of the timing belt are pushed in horizontally with a moderate force [approx. 49N (11lb)], the timing belt cog end is aprox. 1/2 of the tensioner mounting bolt head radius (across flats) away from the bolt head center.

4)Timing belt tension measuring procedure
(by a sonic tension guage)
Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction to set 1st piston on top dead center (TDC) and rotate crankshaft in counterclockwise to 90° then measure the belt tension in the middle of tension side span (in arrow direction of above illustration) by free vibration method.


9.Turn the crankshaft two turns in the operating direction (clockwise) and realign crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket timing mark.


10.Install the timing belt lower cover with 5bolts

Tightening torque :7.8 ~ 9.8N.m (0.8 ~ 1.0kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 7.2lb-ft)

11.Install the flange and crankshaft pulley, and then tighten crankshaft pulley bolt. Make sure that crankshaft sprocket pin fits the small hole in the pulley.

Tightening torque :137.3 ~ 147.1N.m (14.0 ~ 15.0kgf.m, 101.3 ~ 108.5lb-ft)

12.Install the timing belt upper cover with 4 bolts.

Tightening torque :7.8 ~ 9.8N.m (0.8 ~ 1.0kgf.m, 5.8 ~ 7.2lb-ft)

13.Install the water pump pulley and 4 bolts.

14.Install the power steering pump drive belt

15.Install the air conditioner compressor drive belt

16.Install the alternator drive belt

17.Install the RH side cover with 2 bolts

18.Install the RH front wheel.


Tightening torque :88.3 ~ 98.1N.m (9.0 ~ 10.0kgf.m, 65.1 ~ 72.3lb-ft)

19.Install the engine cover with bolts.


Tightening torque :3.9 ~ 5.9N.m (0.4 ~ 0.6kgf.m, 2.9 ~ 4.3lb-ft)

Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???


most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

Timing Belt - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Although timing belts may last for thousands of miles past the recommended replacement interval, they should be replaced every 60,000 miles to prevent trouble or damage should they snap. Timing belts do not usually give an indication that they are worn or aging without removing the cover(s) and inspecting the belt. A worn or damaged belt could give out at any time. In some cases, should a timing belt snap while the engine is running, damage could be done to the valve trains or pistons requiring a partial or full engine disassembly. Also, should the belt go when the vehicle is far from home, a costly tow or even more costly repair job and considerable inconvenience may be suffered.
Timing belts must always be handled carefully and kept completely free of dirt, grease, fluids and lubricants. This includes any accidental contact from spillage, fingerprints, rags, etc.. These same precautions apply to the pulleys and contact surfaces on which the belt rides.The belt must never be crimped, twisted or bent. Never use tools to pry or wedge the belt into place. Such actions will damage the structure of the belt and possibly cause breakage.


Spectrum
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3)
The engine must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure to be performed.
  1. Remove the engine and mount it to an engine stand.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  3. Remove the engine mounting bracket from the timing cover.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the notch on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the 0 degree mark on the timing cover and the No. 4 cylinder is on TDC of the compression stroke.
  5. Remove the starter and install the flywheel holding tool No. J-35271 or equivalent.
  6. Remove the crankshaft bolt, boss and pulley.
  7. Remove the timing cover bolts and the timing cover.
  8. Loosen the tension pulley bolt.
  9. Insert an Allen wrench into the tension pulley hexagonal hole and loosen the timing belt by turning the tension pulley clockwise.
  10. Remove the timing belt.
  11. Remove the head cover.
Inspect the timing belt for signs of cracking, abnormal wear and hardening. Never expose the belt to oil, sunlight or heat. Avoid excessive bending, twisting or stretching.
To install:
  1. Position the Woodruff key in the crankshaft followed by the crankshaft timing gear. Align the groove on the timing gear with the mark on the oil pump.
  2. Align the camshaft timing gear mark with the upper surface of the cylinder head and the dowel pin in its uppermost position.
  3. Place the timing belt arrow in the direction of the engine rotation and install the timing belt, first to the crankshaft pulley, next to the camshaft pulley, then to the water pump pulley and finally to the tension pulley. Tighten the tension pulley bolt.
Once installed, there must be not slack in the timing belt. The belt teeth must be in perfect alignment with the gears.
  1. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
  3. Check the timing belt tension using a belt tension gauge, it should be 40-48 lbs. (18-22 Kg).
  4. Adjust the valve clearances.
  5. To complete the installation, reverse the removal procedures. Torque the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).

Storm - SOHC ENGINE
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3)
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt cover. If necessary, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the right under cover to access the lower timing cover bolts.
  3. If not done already, rotate the crankshaft so that the No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke by aligning the camshaft pulley timing mark to the 9 o'clock position.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley center bolt, the 4 crankshaft pulley side bolts and the crankshaft pulley from the vehicle.
  6. Loosen the belt tension pulley bolt, then remove the timing belt from around the tensioner and other pulleys. Remove the timing belt from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Make sure the crankshaft pulley keyway and groove is aligned with the oil pump timing mark and the camshaft pulley timing mark is in the 9 o'clock position. Install the timing belt around the crankshaft timing pulley, followed by the tensioner pulley, water pump pulley and the camshaft timing pulley.
  2. Tighten the belt tensioner retaining bolt. Make sure that the belt is properly tightened and is aligned evenly around all the pulleys:
    1. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump.
    2. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
    3. Check the timing belt tension/deflection using a belt tension gauge. The belt should deflect 0.63-0.79 in. (16-20mm) when 22 lbs. (98 N) of pressure is applied to the center of the longest belt stretch.
  3. Check that the camshaft is still aligned to the 9 o'clock position.
  4. Install the timing belt cover, secure it with the 2 lower mounting bolts, then torque the bolts to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft dampener, secure the center bolt and the 4 side bolts. Torque the center bolt to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm) and the 4 side bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6. If removed, install the right side under cover.
  7. Lower the vehicle. Install the 4 upper timing belt cover retaining bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8. Install the right engine mount.
  9. Install the power steering pump drive belt and alternator drive belt. Adjust them to the proper belt tension.
  10. Remove engine support fixture and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Timming belt broke on 93 plymouth lazer and need instalation directions


It is recommended that the timing belt be replaced periodically to assure correct engine performance. Because of their composition, timing belts wear over a period of time and mileage. To avoid vehicle break down and possible engine damage, the manufacturer recommends timing belt replacement at 60,000 miles.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION1.8L Engine
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. If possible, position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the timing (outer) belt tensioner and remove the outer timing belt.
  5. Remove the outer crankshaft sprocket and flange.
  6. Remove the silent shaft (inner) belt tensioner and remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Align the timing marks of the silent shaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket with the timing marks on the front case. Wrap the timing belt around the sprockets so there is no slack in the upper span of the belt and the timing marks are still aligned.
  2. Install the tensioner pulley and move the pulley by hand so the long side of the belt deflects about 1 / 4 in.
  3. Hold the pulley tightly so the pulley cannot rotate when the bolt is tigthened. Tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and recheck the deflection amount.
  4. Install the timing belt tensioner fully toward the water pump and tighten the bolts. Place the upper end of the spring against the water pump body.
  5. Align the timing marks of the camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprockets with their corresponding marks on the front case or rear cover.
There is a possibility to align all timing marks and have the oil pump sprocket and silent shaft out of time, causing an engine vibration during operation. If the following step is not followed exactly, there is a 50 percent chance that the silent shaft alignment will be 180 degrees off.
  1. Before installing the timing belt, ensure that the left side (rear) silent shaft (oil pump sprocket) is in the correct position as follows:
    1. Remove the plug from the rear side of the block and insert a tool with shaft diameter of 0.31 in. (8mm) into the hole.
    2. With the timing marks still aligned, the shaft of the tool must be able to go in at least 2 1/2 in. If the tool can only go in about 1 in., the shaft is not in the correct orientation and will cause a vibration during engine operation. Remove the tool from the hole and turn the oil pump sprocket 1 complete revolution. Realign the timing marks and insert the tool. The shaft of the tool must go in at least 2 1/3 in.
    3. Recheck and realign the timing mark.
    4. Leave the tool in place to hold the silent shaft while continuing.
  2. Install the belt to the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, then camshaft sprocket, in that order. While doing so, make sure there is no slack between the sprocket except where the tensioner is installed.
  3. Recheck the timing marks' alignment. If all are aligned, loosen the tensioner mounting bolt and allow the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.
  4. Remove the tool that is holding the silent shaft and rotate the crankshaft a distance equal to 2 teeth on the camshaft sprocket. This will allow the tensioner to automatically apply the proper tension on the belt. Do not manually overtigthen the belt or it will howl.
  5. Tigthen the lower mounting bolt first, then the upper spacer bolt.
  6. To verify correct belt tension, check that the deflection at the longest span of the belt is about 1 / 2 in.
  7. Install the timing belt covers and all related items.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
2.0L Engine
1990-94 VEHICLES
See Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt upper and lower covers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks so No. 1 piston will be at TDC of the compression stroke. At this time the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the upper surface of the cylinder head should coincide, and the dowel pin of the camshaft sprocket should be at the upper side.
Always rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction. Make a mark on the back of the timing belt indicating the direction of rotation so it may be reassembled in the same direction if it is to be reused.

  1. Remove the auto tensioner and remove the outermost timing belt.

  1. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley, tensioner arm, idler pulley, oil pump sprocket, special washer, flange and spacer.
  2. Remove the silent shaft (inner) belt tensioner and remove the belt.
  3. Remove the crankshaft retaining bolts, then remove the pulley.
  4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket retainer bolt and washer from the sprocket, if used, and remove the sprocket. If the sprocket is hard to removed, the proper puller may be used. If no bolts are used on the sprocket. Use the correct puller to remove.
  5. Hold the camshaft stationary using the hexagon cast between journals No. 2 and 3 and remove the retainer bolt. Remove the sprocket from the camshaft.

To install:
  1. Install the sprockets to their appropriate shafts. Install the retainer bolts and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  2. Check both tensioner and idler pulley for bearing wear, and replace if needed.
  3. Align the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the silent shaft sprocket. Fit the inner timing belt over the crankshaft and silent shaft sprocket. Ensure that there is no slack in the belt.

  1. While holding the inner timing belt tensioner with your fingers, adjust the timing belt tension by applying a force towards the center of the belt, until the tension side of the belt is taut. Tighten the tensioner bolt.
When tightening the bolt of the tensioner, ensure that the tensioner pulley shaft does not rotate with the bolt. Allowing it to rotate with the bolt can cause excessive tension on the belt.
  1. Check belt for proper tension by depressing the belt on its' long side with your finger and noting the belt deflection. The desired reading is 0.20-0.28 in. (5-7mm). If tension is not correct, readjust and check belt deflection.
  2. Install the flange, crankshaft and washer to the crankshaft. The flange on the crankshaft sprocket must be installed towards the inner timing belt sprocket. Tighten bolt to 80-94 ft. lbs. (110-130 Nm).
  3. To install the oil pump sprocket, insert a Phillips screwdriver with a shaft 0.31 in. (8mm) in diameter into the plug hole in the left side of the cylinder block to hold the left silent shaft. Tighten the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (50-60 Nm).

I have an oil leak from under oil filter housing


yes it is safe to take it off. just put some sealant on it or replace the gasket and put it back . this happened to me on 1999 clk 430 . take the belt off to make it easy on your self

Oil leaking out of valve cover gasket


It is a Valve Cover Gasket. You can get a new one at any Auto Parts Store. To make this repair last longer, Do not get the Cheap one, Get a Felpro Gasket and it will Quadrupel the Gasket Life. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Jack up o/s of car and support on stand
Remove front o/s wheel

remove bottom engine covers from inside o/s wheel arch and also bottom engine cover(plastic)

support engine with jack; remove yolk engine mount ( on belt side)

Put 1/2" extension drive into top of belt tensioner and pull toward engine - you can now put a 3mm drill bit or allen key into hole at side of tensioner to hold in position.

remove serpentine belt

from underneath car, use 8mm ( I think) allen key to remove centre bolt from belt tensioner

It should now come off of the car

fitting is the reverse of the above
