Hi.I have a 1998 Dodge Avenger sport with almost 53,000 miles on it.Car is automatic with V6 and 2.5L.The check engine light stays on.I took car to sears auto center and was told the computer in the car is shot.I need a new computer. That is why the check engine light stays on.I was also told that new computer will cost alot of money. The car runs perfect. No problems with it.The car will not pass state inspection with this issue. What should I do now?? I don't have alot of money to spend. Can someone please help me out?? Thanks.

Hi.Thanks for your great help!! My other question is should I take it to the dealer or just find a auto shop that can install the replacement computer?? Yes I will take it to another shop for a second opinion.I was also told by sears that they don't install or deal with the computer issues.Thanks.

Hi.Yes I did disconnect the battery but in a few days the check engine light comes back on.I will do as you said and buy a cheap code reader. Also when you said for me to drive for 50 miles with no check engine light coming on- what exactly do you mean by this?? Thanks.

Hi guys.I just want to update you with status of my 1998 Dodge Avenger Sport.Took the car to autozone where they scanned it for me.This code comes up- P0740.This is a torgue converter issue.I then took the car to lee myles and yes indeed it is the torgue converter. Now here is the hard part- the cost-labor alone is $695 plus the cost of parts.Lee myles could not give me a total for everything until they see what parts are needed.Does anyone here know what I should expect to pay when the work is done?? I am guessing around $1000 to $1500 bucks.Am I in the right price range?? Please someone here help me out.Thanks.

I will help you.I dont think your cpu is bad.there is two things u can do.1 of them is free.and the other is about 25.00 dollars ether disconnect the car battery.negative wire black one and wait about 10 min.this should clear the computer code.or go to the auto parts store and buy a cheap code reader 25.00 dollars and read the code your self.also the code reader will reset the check engine light. But u will have do drive the car for at least 50 miles with no check engine light coming on. ok

I really hate to say this because i don't recommend used parts to be put into a vehicle especially when it comes to electrical or computer components, but you may be able to check your local parts yards and see if they may have what you need if you are on a tight budget. Or you may have to buy a new computer. I would have also take it somewhere else for a second opinion before spending the money on a new computer. ope this helps.

If you can find a reputable repair shop in your area, you should be okay taking it to them to do the repairs, chances are they are going to want to scanit themselve just to verify the problem as well. If they are able to do the repairs you should be ok.

98 dodge avenger transmission problem

codes will verify if it needs to be pulled out. More than likely it will as the electronics are rarely the problem. The computer senses a indifference in the ratio between the sensors so it locks it in limp mode - 2nd gear.
