Question about 2002 Pontiac Sunfire

Engine codes p1133 p0171 p0507 p0131 all at once

High idle sometimes it idles high then low sorta pulsing.
somtimes if I turn the heater to defrost it idle up to 4000 rpm but as soon as I take it off defrost it goes back down

    I checked the vacuum lines they all look good 3 of the 4 codes point to a O2 sensor Also the problem is intermittent it doesn’t happen all of the time also the trac light is on along with the check engine light

    I cleaned it all and changed the fuel filter still get p0171

Per your description, it sounds like you have a vacuum leak.
Check all vacuum hoses at the engine, make sure no hoses are disconnected, cracked or damaged.
Disconnect each hose at the source on the engine and see if the engine idle stabilizes.

    The P01133, 0171 and 0131 are indicating a lean fuel mixture. This can be caused by a number of things.

    • Air leaks in intake manifold, exhaust pipes or exhaust manifold
    • Fuel control sensor is out of calibration (ECT, IAT or MAP)
    • Low fuel pressure (fuel filter clogged, pressure regulator failure)
    • One or more injectors restricted or pressure regulator has failed
    • HO2S element is contaminated, deteriorated or has failed
    • Vacuum hose is disconnected, broken, leaking or loose

    • Engine misfire condition present (look for P0300 series codes)

    Now because your problem is intermittent, the next "no cost" check will be to remove the IAC (idle air control) motor and clean it. If the IAC is sticking, it can cause the same problem.

    Also, did you disconnect the brake vacuum booster hose at the engine and plug it to see if engine normalizes?

    Clean the IAC and throttle body bore and let me know.

possible causes are:

Dirty throttle body
Electric throttle control actuator incorrectly adjusted/faulty/damaged
Air leak on Intake
Poor electrical connection to the Intake Air Control valve

My checkengine keeps coming on the code is p507

If the engine is running rough at idle (although idle speed is normal), then you might have a vacuum leak. This results in a lean air/fuel mix condition and the ECU might over-compensate by trying to "richen" the air/fuel ratio.

Vacuum leaks are unpredictable and not always easy to locate; sometimes you pop the hood open and it's right there staring at you --- a cracked or disconnected vacuum line! Reconnect and it's good to go. The check engine light will turn off after you complete a drive cycle.

If the idle speed is too low or jumping up and down, your IAC (Idle Air Control) motor may be malfunctioning and in need of replacement.

My 2005 altima idles high and engine code

This P0507 code is one that's sometimes triggered on vehicles that have electronic throttle control. That is, they don't have a regular throttle cable from the accelerator pedal to the engine. They rely on sensors and electronics to control the throttle. In this case, the P0507 DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is triggered when the PCM (powertrain control module) detects an engine idle speed that is greater than the desired (pre-programmed) RPM. In the case of GM vehicles (and possibly others) if the idle speed is over 200 rpm higher than expected, this code will be set.

Sounds like you just need to replace the one or two 02 sensors on bank 1.If you have over 100,000 miles the 02 sensos are realy to be replaced just as spark plugs and air filteres. If you wait to long to replace them you take a chance of them not comming out and then when they do go bad you will need to replace the exhaust as well.Hope this helps and good luck.

The engine races and the temp drops. I asked the question yesterday and was told to check the idle air control. There is not one on my model. anyone?

I'm assuming that you have idle high in the engine, and IAC fault code.


Know Your Circuit:
* In order to regulate the air entering into the engine, the Engine Control Module (ECM) uses an Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve.
* To raise the idle rpm, the ECM handles the pintle inside the IAC valve away from the throttle body seat.
* This enables additional air to bypass through the throttle blade.
* To lower the rpm the ECM controls the pintle towards the throttle body seat.
* This successfully reduces the amount of air bypassing the throttle blade.
* A scan tool will note the IAC valve pintle position.
* The greater the count, the greater air is allowed to bypass the throttle blade.
* This DTC ensures whether a low idle condition exists as defined as 100 rpm below the desired idle rpm.

Pre -requisites For Setting the DTC:
· No intrusive tests are active.
· DTC(s) P0106, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0122, P0123, P0131, P0132, P0133, P1133, P1134, P0171, P1171, P0172, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0300, P0336, P0337, P0341, P0342, P0351, P0352, P0402, P0404, P1404, P0405, P0406, P0443, and P0502 are not set.
· Engine is running > 60 seconds.
· Barometric Pressure (BARO) is > 72 k Pa (10.4 psi).
· Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) is > 60°C (140°F).
· Ignition voltage ranges between 11 and 16 volts.
· The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) is > -20°C (-4°F).
· Manifold Absolute Pressure is less than 60 k Pa (8.7 psi).
· IAC valve is fully opened.
· All of the above must be met for more than 5 seconds.


Diagnostic Tools:
* Probe the IAC valve electrical connection for proper mating.
* Examine the wiring harness for damage.
* See whether the throttle stop screw shows signs of distortion.
* Also inspect the throttle linkage for signs of binding or excessive wear and tear.
* The following conditions may be created by a slow or unsteady idle:

1) Fuel system very high or low.
2) Foreign material in the throttle body or in the induction system bore
3) A leaking or restricted intake manifold.
4) Excessive engine overloading. Check for seized pulleys, pumps, or motors on the accessory drive
5) Excess engine oil.

Codes 1133-0131-0171-0300

p1133 - o2 sensor, Insufficiant Switching, Bank 1 Sensor 1.
p0131 - o2 sensor circuit, low voltage, bank 1 sensor 1
p0171 - Lean condition, Bank 1
p0300 - Random Misfire

I would be looking at the front passenger side oxygen sensor for issues. It may be bad, it may not be plugged in, bad wiring at harness.

The random misfire may be symptomatic of the o2 sensor problem.
