Question about 1991 Plymouth Voyager

1 Answer

My car just failed smog emissions test, had high nox count, at 15 miles about double max allowed, at 25 mit iles per hour, triple max allowed. The car is a 91 plymouth voyager.During the test it smoked under a load but not when the sniffer was put in the tail pipe. What would you recommend? The overall test results were good, in that it passed catalytic converter, egr, fuel evaporative test, all passed. But the ASM Emission tests labeled the car a gross polluter. What would you suggest I do next?

I would put a good tank of gas in the system. like 93 super.drive the car for about 1 week or at least 100 miles. i would also go to a good auto parts store.u should be able to buy a bottle of engine cleaner to pass the smog test.also when u bring the car in for the inspection.take it for a rideand get it nice and warmed up.

Failed emissions hc high

First I recommend changing spark plugs, air filter, and change the oil & filter. If these are dirty or fouled up it will kill your millage and help to fail smog.
You can reduce both NOX and CO emmissions by adding denatured alcohol to the gas tank. Run it down to a bit under 1/4 tank and add 1 1/2 gallons. It makes the engine run a bit rough, but really clean.
If you still fgail SMOG then you need a new catalytic converter.
I used to "trick" my 86' with alcohol, but just rebuilt the engine so I put a new Cat on it. It passed emissions with WELL BELLOW numbers.

Good luck.

Your EGR is plug or is non operational,When the EGR is not plug and is in operational its job is to cool the combustion chamber thus lowering Nox.

My 1990 Jeep Cherokee Lorado, with 103,000 miles failed the smog test. It failed the 15 miles per hour and 25 miles per hour test non the DYNO. The tech? ran the motor to the most outrageous REVING, that...

its most likely a catalytic converter issue. they are usually only good for 10 years, mileage has no bearing on their lifespan. the precious metals inside wear out over time, not miles. in many parts of the country where we dont have smog tests most folks dont even know they have a failed converter untill the dang thing falls off the car.

1989 Toyota 22re fails California Emissions Test. Rebuilt the engine 20K or so miles ago. Has passed most tests with just a little bit of timing adjustments. At 15 MPH, (1670 RPM) HC measures 153...

HC is hydrocarbons or unburnt fuel.(raw fuel ).NO no such gas measurement.did you mean CO this is carbon monoxide or incomplete combustion.(all the fuel is not being burnt).if you mean NOX this is nitrates of oxide and is related to a heat problem.(motor running hot,bad catalytic converter).its probably getting too much fuel and not burning it all, possibly tune-up problem, carburetor(if it has one),bad fuel injection system(dirty injectors),computer(if it has one)may be getting a wrong signal.these are in reference of high HC and CO.for high NOX cooling system not keeping motor cool enough, cooling fan problem(weather clutch fan or electrically controlled cooling fan),poor cooling system circulation, bad catalytic converter.not a running lean problem as the other gases indicate rich problem.the converter may not be able to convert the emission gases to H2O and CO2 out the tailpipe.

Here are a few things to look at:
Have you replaced the air filter? Have a compression test done on the engine, could possibly be a leaking vale. If any vacuum hoses have been removed from the engine they will have to be re-installed. Solid Lifters out of adjustment can cause incomplete combustion. Make sure engine is reaching proper operating temperature (eg. thermostat). Do not use low grade (octane) fuel for test.
Clean oil, tire pressure, brake drag?, every little thing counts.

Failed smog

We had to have the calatic converter replaced. We did this after doing an oil change, air filter change, and new spark plugs and still hadn't passed smog. After changing the calatic converter it passed smog with scores of 25.

Failed Smog Test Close to CA-HC Limits

You can try some over the counter solutions per say. Some of the mechanics in a bottle. They sell some products This will probably be the cheapest router. If this doesn't work then you need repairs.

Pass your emissions test.
