You unfortunately have to strip the gearbox, because although the seal is fitted from the outside, the selector shaft has to come out first, and what it's connected to inside can't be undone after gaining access from the plate with 3 bolts on the LH side of the box. The bolt you need to undo is on the RH side of the selector shaft INSIDE the box.

How to replace a TCC solenoid on a 2001 dodge ram


The solenoid is inside the transmission.
Just because you have a P1740 that doesn't mean the TCC is assertive, have you done the testing with alive data scanner?

The factory doesn't serive the TCC solenoid seperatly, you need to buy the entire valve body, you may be able to buy it in the aftermarket not sure, talk to a local transmission rrepair shop, they may no this.

REMOVAL
The valve body can be removed for service without having to remove the transmission assembly.

The valve body can be disassembled for cleaning and inspection of the individual components.

The only replaceable valve body components are:

Manual lever.
Manual lever washer, seal, E-clip, and shaft seal.
Manual lever detent ball.
Throttle lever.
Fluid filter.
Pressure adjusting screw bracket.
Governor pressure solenoid.
Governor pressure sensor (includes transmission temperature thermistor).
Converter clutch/overdrive solenoid assembly and harness .
Governor housing gasket.
Solenoid case connector O-rings.
Shift transmission into NEUTRAL.
Raise vehicle.
Remove gearshift and throttle levers from shaft of valve body manual lever.
Disconnect wires at solenoid case connector (Transmission Case Connector).
Position drain pan under transmission oil pan.
Remove transmission oil pan and gasket.
Remove fluid filter from valve body.
Remove bolts attaching valve body to transmission case.
Lower valve body enough to remove accumulator piston and springs.
Work manual lever shaft and electrical connector out of transmission case.
Lower valve body, rotate valve body away from case, pull park rod out of sprag, and remove valve body.
INSTALLATION
Check condition of O-ring seals on valve body harness connector . Replace seals on connector body if cut or worn.
Check condition of manual lever shaft seal in transmission case. Replace seal if lip is cut or worn. Install new seal with 15/16 deep well socket (Manual Lever Shaft Seal).
Check condition of seals on accumulator piston (Accumulator Piston Components). Install new piston seals, if necessary.
Place valve body manual lever in low (1 position) so ball on park lock rod will be easier to install in sprag.
Lubricate shaft of manual lever with petroleum jelly. This will ease inserting shaft through seal in case.
Lubricate seal rings on valve body harness connector with petroleum jelly.
Position valve body in case and work end of park lock rod into and through pawl sprag. Turn propeller shaft to align sprag and park lock teeth if necessary. The rod will click as it enters pawl. Move rod to check engagement.
CAUTION: It is possible for the park rod to displace into a cavity just above the pawl sprag during installation. Make sure the rod is actually engaged in the pawl and has not displaced into this cavity.

Install accumulator springs and piston into case. Then swing valve body over piston and outer spring to hold it in place.
Align accumulator piston and outer spring, manual lever shaft and electrical connector in case.
Then seat valve body in case and install one or two bolts to hold valve body in place.
Tighten valve body bolts alternately and evenly to 11 N·m (100 in. lbs.) torque.
Install new fluid filter on valve body. Tighten filter screws to 4 N·m (35 in. lbs.) torque.
Install throttle and gearshift levers on valve body manual lever shaft.
Check and adjust front and rear bands if necessary.
Install the transmission range sensor
Connect solenoid case connector wires.
Install oil pan and new gasket. Tighten pan bolts to 13.6 N·m (125 in. lbs.) torque.
Lower vehicle and fill transmission with Mopar® ATF +4, Automatic Transmission fluid.
Check and adjust gearshift and throttle valve cables, if necessary.

Rebuilt trans installed in 2011. seal leaked in 2012 and was replaced. 2015 leaking again after 7000 miles. Why?


seals depend on a properly positioned shaft upon which they run
most people when reconditioning a transmission neglect to replace the output shaft ( drive shaft) bush in the transmission extension housing which allows the shaft to move concentric to the seal edge
the seal then cannot preform its duty as the seal surface is continually lost and so leaks
So it would appear that the bush is worn or in the case of transverse transmissions a possible failing bearing or bush

Well, not being familiar with your vehicle I can recommend this. The shaft seal is seated in the transmission where the input shaft enters the transmission.

If the seal part is a round metal ring with a rubber inner seal, then in all likelyhood it is pressed into the transmission.

Now if you think you can pull the seal out after you remove the CV drive shaft - meaning do you have enough room to get up in there to pop it out, then yes you can do it without removing the transmission.

On the other hand if the seal is not accessable to pop out then you will probablly have to remove the transmission which is by no means an easy job. Might want to take a look on youtube and do a search for CV inner shaft seal removal for your particular vehicle or one similar. You will probably find the answer there.

Transmission rear seal instalation


remove the drive shaft ( tail shaft) lever out the old seal. put sealer around new seal and fit back in extension housing. Use something that is the same size as the outer edge of the seal and tap it in flush with the edge of the transmission housing. Expect some oil to drain out when the tail shaft and seal is removed

changing 5th gear on most manual gearboxes can be done without removal of the gearbox ,remove the inner wing and then access is quite easy ,take the rear cover off the back of the gearbox undo a nut or bolt on a stud and then gear selector can be removed and then a circlip at the end of the shaft and of it all comes ,

Gear shift lever in column is loose


your problem with the gear selector is in the item 25 these are 2 plastic bushings that wear out and cause the gear selector feels loose, you should also check the item 27 this item has one or two screws loose and cause the gear selector feels loose

Removing selector from c4 transmission


You have to drop the pan and inside is a bolt and roll pin that hold the selector rod in. You have to remove it and the rod will slide right out so you can replace the seal.

usually an "O" ring where the shaft comes out of the box but if the shaft is worn where the seal runs you may have to replace the shaft
