Question about 1993 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Engine Trouble 1993 Nissan Altima GXE, 4 cylinder, 5-speed: The engine rotates, but will not start. The engine stumbles upon acceleration, and throughout driving speed. The engine backfires, a blue/black stinky (not rotten egg stinky, more like chemistry experiment gone very bad stinky) smoke comes out, and I'm hearing a rattling/clapping noise towards the passenger rear side. After shifting from gear to gear, the engine will lack power, then suddenly surge ahead full power....over and over again. I have recently replaced the egr valve, catalytic converter, spark plugs and the fuel injectors. Any ideas? Also, If perchance one or more of the fuel injectors are bad, would I hear the rattling/clapping noise in the rear/left side during/after the engine backfires? Thanks, Brandy Alexander

Your getting backfires? hmm interesting. Seems like your engine is getting flooded and either purging it out of the exhaust or burning it all at once or both (backfire). Sounds like a leaky engine valve to me.There again the bluish smoke indicates to me thatyou are leaking oil somewhere- bad rings or head gasket maybe, which could cause a loss of compression which could also cause your problems. That rattling from the left/rear side sounds like a bad muffler try kicking the muffler (not hard though) next time you walk by it.

sounds like you have water/moisture under the distributor cap, you will need to remove the screws from the cap and remove & dry it. Reinstall the cap and retry. If i remember correctly, Nissan has a rubber cover over the cap, which will need to be removed first.

1998 Nissan Altima 2.4L auto trans. Code P0302(cylinder#2 misfire) When accelerating from a dead stop the engine will misfire for a second or two and then smooth out as i accelerate. At steady highway...

If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
I know the elm327 plastic 1.4 can help you reset the code....
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

The 4th cylinder in the engine in my 1994 Nissan altima gxe is missfiring what to do

Exchange #4 coil with #2 coil, clear code, start vehicle and re check
for codes. If the code indicates a problem in #2 cylinder we will need to
replace coil. Replace coil, test drive vehicle and confirm repair. GOOD
LUCK..
