I've been told by one mechanic that it is one of the sensors. Could it be just that?

  • paras42 May 02, 2009

I took my car to the mechanic (toyota dealership) to get an oil change last week.

The following things were done on my car:

    1. Oil change.
    2. New Air filter.
    3. An oil leak was discovered, so he changed the timing chain tensioner o-ring.

    2
days later, the check engine light comes on. The car has about 105k
miles on it. This is the first time the light came on. I suspect it has
to do something with the mechanic did. I took the car to an autozone:
the code came back P0420--Catalyst system efficiency below threshold -
    bank 1.

Is there anything that could have been done to the car
by the mechanic, , even by accident, that could result in this check
engine light coming on? Could it be a loose hose or problem with the
new air-filter causing the AF sensor to error. I highly doubt it is due
to the catalytic converter, particularly since it occured right after I
took it to the mechanic. I suspect it has to do something with what the
mechanic did. Any help would be appreciated.

ok the bank 1 is where the cilinder one is get a firing order and see where is the number one cylinder that's the bank one
then follow the exaust and replace the sensor after the catalitic
or converter

before doing anything make sure you have to code for your radio if you have the antilock radio feature!
disconnect the battery wait a few moments I can only give this info for a quick fix this will reset the computer and if it was just a glitch it should be fine after this should it reacour it is a oxygen sensor

hi,my friend, you can try,

Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.

Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).

Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary

Replace the catalytic converter

Troubleshooting code p0420

P0420 = Bank 1 catalyst system efficiency below threshold. This DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is set when the O2 downstream sensor indicates/measures the amount of hydrocarbons/oxygen present in the exhaust after it passes through the converter. When this sensor detects exhaust gasses identical/near identical to the upstream O2 Sensor (the actual gasses at the exhaust port - before the converter), it will set this 'efficiency below threshold' code. The catalyst has failed to 'convert' the exhaust gasses to CO2 + Water.

Need to pass emissions test, dianostic test - Catalyst efficiency blow threshold (bank 1) tried to order part - now I need to know if it pre or post, left or right Oxygen sensor, can it be determined by...

Yes it can be determined by the DTC (Data Trouble code). If the DTC is P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold Bank-1) then the side of the engine with the #1 spark plug and cylinder is always Bank-1, and the O2 sensor that monitors the catalyst efficiency is usually after or (post) of the catalytic converter.

The #1 cylinder is located at the front spark plug on the right or the passenger side of the vehicle, so Bank-1 is on the right side of the vehicle, and the O2 sensor that monitors the catalyst efficiency should be located after or (post) of the catalytic converter. It would be the post right O2 sensor.

There is also the possibility that the catalytic converter is actually starting to fail, and if changing the O2 sensor and clearing the DTC does not solve the problem them the catalytic converter is most likely faulty.

Diagnostic code produces P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold-Bank 1. Probable causes are listed as follows:
1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault,
4-faulty catalytic converter.

Code PO42O and PO43O ? Anyone know what they

The meaning of: P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold on Bank 1 P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold on Bank 2

Basically the Oxygen sensors ( one before and one after the catalytic converter ) have abnormal readings from the exhaust. Further diagnosing will need to be done by a mechanic to find the source of the problem. The possibilities could be the O2 sensors themselves, a leak in the exhaust manifold, a bad catalytic converter, and etc.
