Service engine soon light comes on when the computer detects a problem. 1994 is OBD I and you need a GM OBD I code reader. Once the code(s) are retrieved you will know what the problem is and then you can fix it. OBD I is limited, and in my experiences, the most common cause is the oxygen sensor failing.
oxygen sensors are not serviced by mileage on newer models. When the sensor starts to fail, the "check engine" light will go on. Pulling codes will indicate problem areas. On a good running engine, you may never have to replace the O2 sensor,
The error that I'm showing for error code P1133 is P1133 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) insufficient switching bank 1 sensor 1(Rear Bank). I would suggest having both of your Oxygen Sensors replaced if you haven't already had that done. Hope this helps. Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa.
The check engine soon can refer to a loose or missing fuel cap. The computer checks the tank pressure, and should see it go down when running. If the cap is the case, the light should go out after about 10 starts. The Oxygen sensor cannot be cleaned, and should be replace every 80K miles or so. Running on a degraded sensor makes your fuel mileage worse. Most Pep Boys locations can read the code and tell you the exact cause for that light.
