Thanks I took it to auto zone and got a free diagnostic which read probable cause:open or short circuit condition, cooling fan relay fault, failed cooling fan clutch. Code #2 probable cause: check coolant level, thermostat defective, engine coolant temperature sensor defective. My question is how safe is it to drive with this situation? I plan on taking it in this weekend, is that too long?

Fans will run constantly on many models if the air conditioning is on. Many GM models use the air conditioning to dry incoming air when set to defrost. Are you using the air or defroster?

Your Vehicle Has a Manual Fan Clutch.. So it will run constantly.. Un fortunately.. Its probably bad , It does have a speed sensor built into the fan that make its sound like a jet running full blast all the time.. And It does run off the Belt.. Its Not electric..

Driving along makes a very loud noise like motor is racing, but continue driving, noise goes away then starts again???

Please take a look at your Engine's RPMs when this is happening and let us know, as it will help with the diagnosis. If the Engine RPM is stable (not high during the periods of the racing engine sound), then it sounds like your Radiator Fan clutch may be going out. The noise you are hearing is the fan kicking in and blowing a lot of air, which in turn sounds like the engine is racing.

If the RPMs are increasing with the racing engine sound, it could be the transmission/(clutch if manual trans) slipping.
Hope this helps!

What would cause a winding noise in the engine from starting engine, during driving, and does not stop winding until it's turned off?

That could be any number of things but I would suspect that the bearings are going in one of the pulleys driven by the fan belt.

Does radiator fan blow towards or away from radiator

Toward.

During normal driving, the fan will be off, because air is being pushed through the radiator. When stopped, the fan will cut on, pushing air through the radiator and cooling the engine.

Also, make sure the radiator fan is on the inside (engine side) of the radiator, so it is not blocking the air during normal driving.

If running mutiple errands and the car has been startet and stopped after a few times when trying to start the engine the wont stay running.

Most modern vehicles using an electric cooling fan have a thermostatic switch that will allow them to run even after the engine is turned off. Start and stop driving can cause heat buildup in the block which can cause problems such as the one you have and if the fan isn't bringing the excessive heat down during a stop, the hot engine can refuse to idle or accept fuel as it should.
You should listen to see if the fan is turning on after the ignition is off; this is sometimes delayed for a minute or so until the thermostatic switch adjusts to the rising block temperature and starts the fan. If the main fan is belt-driven, it may be the AC fan that is used for this purpose.

The fan on the engine does not turn on for cooling during or after car stops what could be the problem?

It could be the fan switch on the engine, the fan motor itself, the fan relay or the fuse for the fan.

1998 Cadillac DeVille Overheats

The cooling fans will not come on until 225 degrees. Normal temp is around 199-215. Sitting still in traffic most will inch up around 220 or so. When you turn ac on it turns the fans on and may cool down engine, Check fan operation.

Engine overheat

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand it would appear that the radiator fan is not working. In some versions, either the A/C or the heater must be turned on for the radiator fan to work. In some other incidents, the fan utilizes a clutch. Common design makes use of the inverse property of silica oil to serve as the clutch. Still others have a relay that actually does the switching on of the fan. Of course it would be to your advantage to likewise check the temperature sensor on the radiator.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Overheating engine: termo guage at the middle during idle

The Temp gauge should read in the middle of the gauge at operating temperature. This is normal. The radiator fan should come on after idling (not driving) for 20 minutes. The fan should also come on when you turn on the AC. Are you experiencing overheat problems?
Please reply if you have overheating issues.
