Question about 2001 Hyundai Sonata
Car bogs down when trying to accelerate when driving. While in park i can rev the engine but the engine stumbles and almost dies when it goes over 3k rpms. Check engine light is on and received p421 and p304. I checked the spark plugs wires and they are fine and I also replaced the spark plugs. Not sure what else it could be other than an O2 sensor or catalytic convertor.
My Son's 01 Sonata displayed the exact same systems and it was his catalytic converter. The metallic sounds were the converter guts disintegrating.

Ditto. My catalytic died from a larger problem. The crank shaft position sensor on the 01 gls sonata has a terrible mount and eventually breaks and causes the engine to mis-fire.. I had 2 cylinders misfiring and the unspent fuel caused the converter to overheat and ultimately fail.
Not only does this limit acceleration, it seriously hinders engine performance in cold weather.

The missing while accelerating is likely due to ignition coils and/or spark plugs going bad. The missing while in park is a normal thing. The car has a rev limiter that will not allow the engine to rev to higher than 3000 RPM while in park.
