I've had the problem in an 18-year-old V40. The starter relay was buzzing when the ignition key was in the driving position, but when I turned it to the starting position nothing happened. Connecting a jumper lead between the negative battery terminal and any metal flange on the engine let it start.
Now I have It to find the engine earthing strap and replace it.
