I parked my 2005 jeep wrangler X (auto trans) when I came back the gear shift moves but the transmission does not engage Vehicle starts all lights indicate vehicle is operating proper Jeep has 29000 mile on it Fluid levels are fine - Is it possible cable came loose? If so where does it connect on trans. I am having a heck of a time following the cable from the gearshift to the trans. I sure miss the old days of levers and rods

Hope this helps - I had same problem, shift lever moving but transmission not engaging. Turned out the shift cable had slipped off the transmission shift lever on the front upper left side of the transmission Looks like cheap plastic retainer was used, based on what is left on the lever, going to jeep tomorrow to get part so I can reattach cable. Part worth 50 cents, but will most like cost me 10 bucks Anyone want to buy a low mile "cherry" wrangler I am p---ed Political statement follows - They want us to bail them out again so they can deliver more high priced shoddy vehicles Plastic on critical parts are for toys

Trans fluid is full right? If it's full, when was the last time trans oil was changed? NEVER go by manufacturers interval they couldn't care less if your trans dies. Change fluid every 25K. It's way cheaper than a new unit. If you read manual, "severe service" is just about anything more than sitting in your garage!!
About slipping...if unit is full and change does not help, you need a rebuild. Only trust a reputable shop to do this. Ask people you know before turning it over to just anyone! It's a machine...sometimes even with the best care they break. If it broke get the best people to fix it.

Sorry, but it is recommended to go to a service and make a diagnose. Seems that the automatic transmission has a fault.

Hello schuetzbrn

I would strongly suggest that the next time this happens to you, go to Autozone and ask them to scan your Jeep for the code. this will be your best bet at knowing what it is and what to do next. Go from there. it shouldn't be a major problem if the engine light doesn't stay on.

Manual transmission grinds/crackles in 5th gear

The syncronizers and blocker ring are damaged some stores like auto zone have a super synthetic gear lube I had this problem in my 95 wrangler and the problem went away. Its going to be hard to find tranny parts for that car I just put a new tranny in from the junk yard with 70k miles for $200 its in perfect operating condition.

Transmisson on my jeep knocks

Sounds like you may have a bad cluster gear in the tranny. You can get a brand new tranny for a decent price through Quadratech. Be wary of the rebuilt tranny. If not done correctly you will have more problems again.
