Question about 2003 Nissan Pathfinder

Loose lots of power periodically

It's happened twice - all of a sudden, the engine's performance goes WAY down, to the point that I'm flooring it, and it's barely picking up speed... Transmission still shifts at the normal RPM. It's almost as it not enough gas is getting to the engine... Thoughts? 2003 Pathfinder SE, w/ 75K miles - 4WD

I am also facing the same problem. Last week while driving at 110 Km/ Hr speed enginealmost came to halt for a second and gone back to normal level. I change spark plug and tuned the Carboratter. However after a week it again happened. But this time the malfunction indicator light is not on. Any suggestions please.

Try checking your oil levels. Mine does the same thing because for some reason they burn oil and you need to make sure that it didn't burn all of it. I have actually ran my pathfinder w/out oil a few times. As soon as I feel the hesitation, I check my engine oil level- and there's the problem.

Do you have a check engine light on or flashing when it looses power?

Sudden loss of power

Are you sure the battery is being drained during this process? That would be a major draw from something, but then you said "...suddenly full power again,". It sounds more like a connection or a terminal working loose at times, not able to pass normal voltage. You sure need a voltmeter, my friend.

I think I would want to have that new alternator tested again, just to make sure it is not defective. A lot of aftermarket parts are turning up like that. Did you replace the alternator and battery because this condition was present? Do you know your battery cables and ground points are all good and secure, and corrosion free? You might want to double check all the grounds you can find- the battery negative cable, the engine to body strap, or cable, maybe an engine and computer harness ground point-look around the top of the engine for a ground wire coming out of the engine wire harness and going to ground at a nearby bolt. Also check all alternator connections.

If you have to keep looking, look at the power side of the power distribution scheme. From the battery, power goes to the Power Distribution Center, maybe called a junction box or junction block...it is where the fuse and relay block under the hood receives power, both from the battery and the tie-in from the alternator, and then distributes it to the major circuits for the car. With all your symptoms, it sounds like the problem is not far from the battery in the power distribution. Sayeth Dr. monte. Good luck.

Have you scanned for any fault codes? Most parts stores have them available to loan out short-term (5 to 10 minutes in their parking lot).

Without any OBD scan, it's very difficult to even point you in a direction.

It could be electrical or fuel-related. When was the last time you had the fuel filter replaced? Check the plugs/coils for fouling and proper connection. Check the battery connections to make sure nothing is loose.

Just had the idle air control motor replaced and within 1 day, the a/c stopped working and a lot of fluid saturated the front passenger side floor board. Can this recent repair be related to this issue as...

You might take it back to who ever changed the idle air control motor and ask them about it. They could have knocked the drain tube out, or plugged it to stop it from dripping on them or the floor.
You can try this...

Could be the drain tube is partially clogged. It is usually located on the fire-wall or down towards the floor pan under the car. It is usually close to where the A/C lines go thru the fire-wall. About 1/2 inch diameter sticking straight out but may have a 90 degree elbow pointing down.
Also, it's been extra hot and humid all over and moisture could be freezing inside the unit when on MAX A/C, then suddenly melting when switched to normal. This opens the outside air door and allows warm/hot air into the unit instead of recirculating the cold air inside the car. The drain may not be able to handle a large, sudden quantity of water.
Perform a "driveway" test. Open the hood, start engine and run the A/C on normal with the windows or doors open. Locate the drain tube by looking for water dripping. Once located twist 2 or 3 pipe cleaners together and verify the tube is clean. Then close the doors/windows and switch to MAX A/C. Check for water dripping. If it stops dripping, water is freezing inside and now you know why!

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the schraeder valve, and then operate the vehicle. I'll bet you will see a corolation between the performance and the fuel pressure. This would indicate a failing fuel pump.

I have a toyota rav 4 1996 & the engine warning light has just started to come on & the car loses power as soon as the light goes on & then the light will just go off & the car runs normal...

Does it loose power all together as if the engine shuts down or does it go itnto a reduced power state?

Check all of your fluid levels. Keep an eye on all of your other gauges when this happens. Some vehicles will automatically go to a reduced power state to protect itself from damage if overheating etc.

More likely, another simple problem could be a loose connection somewhere. Start by checking your battery terminals, and any connections under the hood that can vibrate loose. Typicallly if a problem just "goes away" suddenly. It is an electrical problem.

most likely the engine is already shut off but because of the speed while it's slowing down there is a rev down period ( no pedal respond )

I have the same problem! Car is at ford dealership now. I'm figuring a bad fuel filter, clogged catalytic converter, heck, it could even be that the spark plugs need changing. Hoping for something minor! Will write what my problem is when I find out and you can take it from there

if you don't have a gas cap on the car or if it is on too loosely then that is a possibility. Only other thing I could think of would be water in your fuel. You may try a bottle of "heat" (I think that is how you spell it) at your local auto parts store and chunk it in the gas can. if there were any problems with water that should be the cure.
