Sounds like an 02 or oxygen sensor if it keeps alternating on and off like that

Go to an auto parts store, like Autozone and have them do a free readout of your onboard computer. They can tell you what codes are turning on the check engine light and what they generally mean. You can decide from that information what to do next.

Kia Optima 2002. Diagram of engine has come up on the dashboard display saying check engine, its flickering on and off and the engine sounds like its missing. It has plenty of engine oil?

The "service engine" light will illuminate for many reasons. Was the engine running good before the light was noticed? It could just need a tune-up (Wires/Plugs/Rotor & points). But you could have had a sensor go bad (Oxygen, EGR, etc) The best way to handle it is to read the computer error code.

Many auto parts stores (ie AutoZone, Napa, Advanced Auto, etc) will read the codes for you (for free) and advise you what you should do.

Take it to autozone or another place like it and have them read the codes and tell us what they are.

I own a 2000 Alero and for the past 2 weeks it has been stalling at the stop lights but runs fine on the highway. The service engine light has come on. Is it safe to run for antoher day until I get it

Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Have a orange engin symbol what does it mean any help please

This is the Check Engine light. Read what causes it below.

When the Check Engine light is turned on the computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible faults that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

You can reset the computer by turning the key to the on position. Don't start the engine. Press the gas pedal to the floor and release it all the way. Press all the way to the floor and release. Press all the way to the floor and release. After the third time it will reset the computer.
PLEASE RATE! Check the 4 thumbs up.
Thanks! Have a GREAT DAY!

The check engine light/service engine soon (yellow light) comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system u will seldom feel the car engine run any different, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

Service engine light on mechanics machine read code po456 emmission leak new gas lid was put on two weeks ago light went off for 2weeks.now back on in febuary I had the same thing the shop found a pin hole...

It can simply be the gas cap is not screwed down after the last fillup. Remember too that you need to clear the computer code or it will take 25 to 50 startups to cycle the code out of the system. Autozone or Oreillys scans for free and can wipe the memory of the computer for you. Check for a clamp on the fuel fill which joins the filler to the large tank hose. Its under the wheel well.

Since you wrote about the Febuary service, March, April, and some of May could be within 90 days. Also Emission parts are usually covered by Law for a longer time period. You should check by calling Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Customer service and asking about the earlier replacement part(which parts are covered, if its one of them). You may be able to recover some of that $450, especially if a Dealer charged you for a covered repair.

What the repair facility needs is a "smoker" machine which reveals leaks. There is also a solenoid which opens the vapor canister to draw out fumes. The repair shop should test the part they installed to see if it was defective. There have been several reports to Fixya about Mice eating wiring and chewing hoses. This applies to all models of vehicles.

Service engine soon light came on. AutoZone read

Sometimes you have to wait a week for the light to go off, the computer has to go through several start/run/stop cycles.
