Question about 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Drained battery check engine light came on just before shut off after 10 mile drive in rain then no diff. in gauges but cooling fan stayed on after key was removed .shut off after 10 minutes now after 10 hrs. parked battery is dead

Temp gauge shows high and engine shuts off and cools down and then starts up


check coolant level in the radiator at the cap. have a pressure test done on the coolant system to check for leaks . Have a compression test done to check for head gasket and cracks.. Have the radiator flow tested to check for blocked cores.

1999 dodge caravan gauges are all mest up


Could be different problems.
The cluster issue could be a problem in the printed circuit board inside the cluster.
The cooling fan problem could be low coolant, a blown fuse, a faulty temp sensor, fan motor, or relay.

Have bmw 320i 2001 only 55570 miles. even driving after 10 miles engine get hot. no problems with driving , no warning light but it stays hot even after2 hours. please need advice. car was checked


This bmw is overheating , even after 2hrs, the engine will still be hot after it verheats. the basic thing to do first is to allow the engine to cool down 5-6 hours or even overnight.then check to see if the cooling system is full of coolant. this problem may be caused if lets say the coolant level is low, this can happen if theres a leak in the system. if low fill system and then have it checked for leaks.another problem if the system is not low then you may have a bad thermostat, a bad thermostat will not allow the coolant to flow inturn making engine overheat, the the last common problem could be a bad fan, start in the order i listed as far as the thermostat watch the gauge and feel the lower hose, if the gauge goes to hot and the lowe hose is luke warm or cold and the top radiator hose is hot then the thermostat is bad. the last test is for the fan, if the top hose and the lower hoses are hot and the car is starting to overheat then it may be the fan, see if the fan is spinning, this car may have an electric fan or belt driven fan, if its electric then see if its running, if the fan is not running then testing need to be done to see why, the fuse and the relay will need to be tested and then the fan itself. if the fan is belt driven then you will see if the belt is on the fan pulley and then check the fan clutch, the way the fan clutch works is the fan will run at a slowwer speed than the engine and then when the heat from the radiator gets hot and blows on the front of the clutch this causes the fan clutch to lock up and makes the fan spin faster. check to see if this is happening but if this were to be the problem or if the fan was aproblem the car would not overheat as you are driving rather it would overheat at a stop or in slow traffic because the air flow from the driving would act like a fan as the air flows through the radiator from driving this would cool the engine if it was the fan, but if the car overheats even while moving then it would not be a fan problem but rather the thermostat or low coolant. there is another problem but i would start with these. hope this is helpful.

Yesterday temp gauge began rising. Went to top. Stopped. Let it cool down. Repeated 4 times on 25 mile drive home. This morning put water in reservoir. Gauge rose quickly to normal & stayed. ...


Probably a cooling fan issue or maybe a stuck thermostat.. change thermostat and check that cooling fans engage..good luck...also when you fill up the resorvoir let it be for a while and check to see if level is down, sometimes it takes a while for water to seep into radiator, i assume you dont have a radiator cap?

Charging stystem seems to be working..... But when ever the miss's gets inthe car to go to work,she will get 10 miles and the battery light will start flashing,then get solid and she will lose the head...


When this happens, are the gauges dropping or not working properly or at all? Check the alternator. May not be charging so everything is running off the battery. The battery is used mostly for starting, but the alternator recharges the battery, so if after driving for a short while, and alternator not charging, everything electrical will drain the battery. You can sometimes drive the car for a while when this happens, or if the alternator goes out completely, the car will not run at all.

Heat/Cool gauge fluctuates inconsistently


You might check the coolant level after the engine cools,if it's low add 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Keep an eye on the level to see if it happens again. You might have a small leak in the system. Good luck

Yes pull the cooling fan relay in the fuse panel. It might be bad.

460 overheats


Sounds as if the head gasket is leaking compression pressures into the cooling system. It seems that this problem has just occurred recently. This can be checked at your rad shop. They have a tool that uses a chemical solution that changes color if there is any engine gases present in the coolant.

cooling fan has a relay. check it first. Then check the ECT, Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. It is on the engine and sends a signal to the PCM, Engine Computer.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Cooling Fan, Electric sty~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: WHEN WORKING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, STAY CLEAR OF THE FAN BLADE. BECAUSE IT IS ELECTRIC AND TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE, IT CAN START AT ANY TIME IF THE IGNITION IS ON.
The electric cooling fan is an electro-drive type. Its operation depends upon engine temperature and ignition switch (11572) position. If engine coolant temperature reaches 97°C (207° F) and the ignition switch is in the ON position, the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648) sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) which turns the engine cooling fan motor (8K621) and fan blade assembly on. Because it cannot operate unless the ignition switch is ON, the engine cooling fan motor and fan blade assembly does not operate after engine shutdown. The fan control relay (FC relay) is located in the LH front corner of the engine compartment, between the battery (10655) and the headlamp assembly. Circuit protection is provided by a 30A fuse labeled COOLING FAN in the main fuse junction panel to the left of the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, an additional relay is installed in the circuit. The A/C clutch control relay (19D572) bypasses the engine temperature portion of the circuit. The bypass circuit allows the engine cooling fan motor to operate whenever the A/C switch is engaged.

Fuel Gauge

  1. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Using a jumper, connect the battery positive terminal to the fuel gauge "+" terminal and the battery negative terminal to the fuel gauge "-" terminal.
  1. Connect one lead of a Rotunda Instrument Gauge System Tester 014-R1063 or equivalent to the "F-U" terminal of the fuel gauge (9280), and connect the other lead to the "-" terminal of the fuel gauge.
  1. Adjust the instrument gauge system tester to the resistances shown in the illustration.

  1. If the fuel gauge does not operate as specified, replace the fuel gauge. If the fuel gauge is OK, return to the Pinpoint Test.


Fuel Level Sensor

  1. Remove the fuel level sensor (9275). Refer to Section 10-01 for the removal procedure.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminal A and terminal B of the fuel level sensor.

  1. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the fuel level sensor. If the fuel level sensor is OK, return to the Pinpoint Test.
