I also have the service 4wd light. It usually does not come up for a few minutes when I first start the engine. Once it does, I can not shift from 2wd to 4wd. What could be the issue?

I had exactly this problem. Very easy to fix! The solder joints broke on the push button's PC board at the connector. Pop out the button assembly , disconnect from wire harness and re-solder the connector pins to the PC board.

Why does my 99 Chevy S10 keep jumping out of 2wd into 4wd? It don't want to go back into 2 wd with the yellow light lit?

A common issue with the push button style 4x4 is that the retaining clip in the transfer case comes off of the shaft and allows the actuator to slip in and out of position. I recommend pulling the solenoid out and inspecting it.

How do I get my 96 GMC out of 4wd back into 2wd. It is stuck in 4wd.

Stop the truck, put the transmission shifter in neutral, foot on the brakes, select 2Hi or 2WD and then put the truck into reverse and back up about 10 car lengths until the 4WD light goes out.

1999 siverado 4wd problem..started having problems coming out of 4wd, pushed 2wd dash indicator said 2wd but not in any gear. put in park, got grinding gear sound shut off engine restarted 2wd active now....

sounds like it might be an encoder moter, but the best thing you can do is take it to a good transmission shop so they can hook up their reader and find out for sure
