Re: 1995 gmc 4x4,tac,speedo and autotransmission gear...
I'm having the exact same problem with my 95 gmc half ton 4x4 extended cab. use command start tac, speedometer work as well as indicator light on. Hit brake it all goes out. this happens for a week or so then everythingnworks fine. Right now it is happening again. so you think it is the electric part of ignition switch?

Check transmission fuse its the one labeled PRNDL or similar.Use a test light when you check it by the way.If the fuse is good then its probaly your ignition switch failed. If that fuse is bad or the ignition switch is not suppling power to that fuse your tack, speedo, and gear indicator wont work, and your transmission will go into a safe mode.Safe mode is just the transmission staying in 3rd gear all the time until you fix this.
1997 GMC Subburban 1500 loses Tach Speedo and Trans sticks in High Gear. I changed the ignition Starter switch which I read was the problem but problem is intermittant and still exist? AMMCO told me to try changing the Neutral Saftey switch first, but didn't say why?
This trans is computer controled if your gages quit working as well I would start checking fuses and relays. If this doesn't provide a solution let me know and I will get my manual out and go a little deeper.
i have heard that the ignition switch can be faulty and not let the full voltage thru to the electricaly controlled 4l60e trans.i have the same problem with my 95 1/2 t. i rigged a switched wire from the fuse block via a relay to the proper wire on the trans....ask a trany tech and they will know what im talking about,,,good luck
