Question about 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 Club Cab

1 Answer

I have had the batteries checked on my truck, they are strong and retain power just fine. The problem occurs randomly and usually when i least expect it(of course). When i turn the key the starter shifts the caliper and i can hear it, however the engine does not turn over. It looks like the starter has been replaced recently. How do i figure exactly what the problem is? Could it be a poor connection? could it be a poor starter? Any suggestions?

Car won't start, no lights workwork, brake pedal stiff. Doesn't turn over or make a sound.

Sounds like a dead battery or loose battery cables/connections. Try giving it a boost to see if it will start. Possible bad battery., LIfe expectancy of an automotive battery is 5yrs.....Anything older and it may fail randomly

About once every 2 to 3 weeks car won't start. Battery appears dead. Then next day fine. Battery holding charge, not starter either. Baffe

If the battery appears dead when the fault occurs, it probably is the battery (or pos/neg leads) batteries are devious and take pleasure in appearing fully charged. Eliminate further by replacing battery, buy or borrow. Only other explanation is a short to negative on particular day, check starter motor cables. Best of luck.

What is a misfire on engine control system?

The computer will set a misfire code when it sees a lag in the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. If the crank's rotational speed suffers a power loss from a cylinder not putting out as much power as the others, the computer will set the misfire code for that cylinder, or if it cannot determine which cylinder is not producing the expected power, it will set the code for a random misfire.

Troubleshooting misfire codes generally involves checking gas, spark, and compression. One of those, or the lack of it, is usually responsible for misfires.

have a look at the earth lead from the body of the car to engine to see if this is corroded an easy test would be to put a jump lead from negative of battery to anywhere on engine gearbox if this doesn't solve issue check the lead going to starter motor for corrosion and tightness

The check engine light comes on and it dies on occasion. It is intermittent. Had it scanned and was told the only fault was mass air flow sensor. Cleaned the mass air flow sensor, replaced fuel filter and...

Anytime you make a change to any part of the emissions system, its best to disconnect the
battery for a few minutes. If you don't, the computer retains the fault code and it will usually keep
coming back. When all power is lost to the computer, it will do a complete scan when reconnected
and engine started. Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then reconnect and see what happens.

1994 Subaru Legacy Lsi has intermittent problem starting

With it not wanting to turn over, my guess would be a bad starter solenoid. I would get a second opinion on the engine cylinders. I have never heard of an engine that could not be bored out to some extent, and I would be very surprised if the grooves were deeper than .030'.
