Question about 2002 Ford Explorer

When turn the wheel seems like something is hanging up kinda like the 4x4 is trying to kick in 02 explorer

    say when u are trying to park and u turn the wheel to the left you hear a clunk and like there was a brake hanging up

    well my tires are brand new they are not that old i took the front drive shaft out it seems better but not sure it did not bind up like it did before the rear bearings seem like they are tight any other advice

    That may be what you are feeling.

    I assume it is equipped with 4X4 if so what system do u have. Is it AWD or is it electronic 4X4?

If it is the AWD then it uses a vicious coupling to engage 4WD. It has a special fluid in the coupling that heats up and engages it.
First thing to check is the circumference of the tires. If you have over 1/2 difference in tire size this will cause this. You haven't replaced say 2 tires on it have you?
To check this take a piece of chalk and make a mark on the bottom of the tires and your driveway. Then roll the vehicle until chalk mark comes all the way around and back to the bottom.Then mark the driveway again. Then measure the distance between the 2 marks. Measure all 4 tires this way and if you have more than 1/2 difference this could be what is causing your problem.
If you have driven it for a long period of time like this then the coupling may be locked up and it would have to be replaced.

    Did you have any play in the drive shaft? Make sure that the center yoke on front axle isn't loose have seen many of these come loose. An the rear joint on the front drive shaft are bad about coming apart. If all that looks ok the the problem will be in the vicious coupling inside the transfer case. They are not that hard to replace but they cost around 800 bucks and if you have alot of miles on vehicle then you would probably need to replace bearings also and a whole reman transfer case is about 1200 or so.

It's not going to cause "problems" per say, but it will change the gearing ration between the engine and the wheels. A higher number will give you more low end pulling power (better acceleration), and lower top speed, and, theoretically, less fuel mileage. Limited slip prevents one wheel from turning faster than the other (e.g. - spinning in mud or snow), causing the vehicle to lose traction and turn to one side.

What could be causing a 04 ford explorer xlt to be grinding when turning left, acts like auto 4x4 trying to kick in, any ideas what the problem could be?

the problem you describe seems to be a symptom of dirt or dammage in the autolocking hub system , you will need to dissasemble to see what the cause is any further , this might be a good place to say what i allways tell my fellow 4x4 folks if your gonna drive thru Mud/sand/dirty water then make it a point to carry a jug or two of fresh water with you and after reaching clean road again use this water to flush out seals in front and behind your front tires you'll save your self a bunch of worries down the road

Jerks while turning in 4x4

It is normal that the 4x4 grips on a tight turn if you are on a dry road try it when you have snow or mud you will see that it will not do the same thing. If you keep on going it on a dry road you will brake something in the front diff .

I have a 1998 explorer and the 4wheel drive will switch on like it should and the lights do not blink or anything but I can tell the rear end doea lock in low but never any power to front axle in any...

02 4x4 olds bravada makes loud clanging noise when turning wheel

Have your CV boots and half shafts checked. If these are cracked, they will dry out and cause a lot of noise when turning. Also check your swaybar links, these cause a lot of noise also, but not only while turning.

My 2001 ford explorer sport i stuck in 4 wheel low. How can i fix this?

Put transmission in neutral with engine running push the button for high 4x4 several times. If that doesnt work, tap on 4x4 actuator while someone pushes the button for u. Its kinda like a starter.

4x4 kicks into nutrul when coasting down a hill on a 97 explorer . had to remove electric 4x4 motor and manully switch it back. could this be the motor, switch or something else?

does it stay in gear,when you manually shift it ? The electric 4x4 motor gets dirt and water inside the motor.if it works ok shifting it,try replacing the motor.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.
