First of all check torque converter clutch switch (tcc) switch!! if this switch fails, the tranny will not lock up under drive.

Clutch fluid, commonly referred to as transmission oil or break fluid, is one of the vital liquids required for a vehicle engine to function. Since the fluid level reduces with time during vehicle usage, it becomes necessary to top it off in the clutch reservoir as need arises. But a leak in the clutch reservoir will also result in declining levels. Leaks are more likely to occur at either the slave cylinder or master cylinder, and if left unattended, low fluid levels can cause serious damage to your vehicle. You can ascertain the level by inserting a dipstick in the reservoir; however, certain signs of insufficient fluid will be apparent while driving. 1997 lumina trans. makes light clicking noise and seems as if it is in nuetral while I shift through the gears.

Curious if it is catching the gear? You may need to flush out the old transmission fluid and check for shavings. If there are some you are grinding gears and will have to replace that gear that is causing the loss of your transmission sync.

If your getting a grinding noise when turning it's probably in the power steering. If you leaking fluid you have a hole, more then likely in the high pressure line or the rack and pinion is bad.

Absolutely, if you are hearing grinding noises, that's the internal gears. Also, if you put the car into Drive, Reverse and it takes a moment to go into gear, that's also a sign of a transmission going.

Just a FYI about transmissions, if you purchase a new car and plan on keeping your car for a while, I recommend changing the fluid every 15,000 miles. The dealer recommends 30,000 miles. But here is the kicker, you can acutally do harm in changing the fluid if you haven't done the normal maintenance scheudle fluid changes (every 15K or 30K). The reason is because as old fluid breaks down and if you don't change it and then put new fluid in after 80.000 miles, the new fluid become too corrosive and acutally breaks down the seals and causes slippage in the transmission.

I'm not sure of what your mileage is, but it sounds like the transmission is about to go based on what you are saying.
