02 Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering will chatter and whine when turning to left only

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Are you sure its the power steering and not the left hand ujoint? I had thesame problem but it turned out to be the ujoint. If you look under the front tire grab the axel whhere the joints meet and wiggle it and if it makes a clicking, chattering noise you might want to have it looked at.

Nov 1999 jeep grand cherokee (WJ) power steering to the max, either right or left, whines and draws smoke

driver error and nothing wrong with the power steering
the pump only produces pressure when the steering valves are up set and when the amount of turn is reached and the wheel is no further turned ., the pressure equalizes and then drops off until the valves are again upset
when the driver goes to full lock , left or right, and holds it tight against the lock stops, the pump keeps producing pressure until the pressure relief valve is activated
That is the whining sound as the valve vibrates
now the smoke is from the pump drive belt slipping from the extra load of the over pressurized pump
the leak is from the steering hoses starting to fail from the excessive pressure
good drivers with some intelligence goes to the lock stops then backs the wheel of just a bit to release the pressure on the pump
as I said driver error and it is all in the user manual

Why is my 93 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2 v8 whining?

Did you check all the fluids? Power steering can whine when fluid levels get low. I would think of things that are driven by the engine: power steering pump (check the power steering fluid), AC compressor, water pump, and so on.

Check out the belt tensioner; make sure it's not too tight, and that the pulley is properly lubricated. If that doesn't fix it, ask your mechanic about timing belt issues (fairly soon).

Hope helps.

2002 jeep cherkee makes a winning noise when making a left turn why is that

your power steering pump may be bad. when your car is idle does it make that same whining noise? put some power steering fluid in the pump and see if it makes a difference. if it does not then get the pump replaced.

Jeep makes a whining sound when I turn left sometimes. Doesn't do it when turning right ever and only seems to do it when driving forward. Only happens at low speeds and doesn't seem to affect...

It MAY,,,,,, be the start of a power steering pump problem.Just maybe. The pumps can moan and groan without leaking,so keep an eye on it.Hope this helps.

2004 jeep grand cherokee whining from left front when it is cold and wet

Is this coming from engine compartment? If so, it's more than likely power steering pump/belt. Check for play or a glazed (smooth) fan belt.

Whining noise when turning left seems to go away after vehicle warms up. limited quadra trac

Does the whining sound like it's coming from the power steering? This usually is an indication that the power steering fluid level is low.

99 Jeep grand cherokee steering column makes a clunking

If its a whining noise, check the power steering fluid level and fill if low, otherwise you may have a pump going out or a loose belt
