Question about 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer

4 Answers

Fuel gauge For about a week my fuel guage would go up and down and then finally it just stayed on empty. I have to re-set my mileage and fill-up every time so I know how much gas I have. Every once in a while it will read that there is 1/2 or 1/4 tank, but then goes back to empty, even when it is full. Is this the gauge or is this the flow meter in the tank? Can't go to the dealer, I'm not even living paycheck to paycheck right now.......help???

I have same problem with my fuel gauge It is a shame they do not last longer.

  • magmon1 May 16, 2009

I have the same problem. I have been relying on my trip meter for about 4 months now. It's inconvenient, but too expensive to change, until another problem with the vehicle exists.

I wish there was would be an inexpensive fix.

will the bad fuel sending unit cause the vehicle to have trouble starting too. Will this problem cause the check engine light to turn on. If so then all I have to do is change the fuel sending unit right.

Same problem...Twice now within two years... Dealer says it will cost me $400.00 to fix with new fuel sensor... Somehow I dont beleive them since the last time it happened it was a recall item.... Thinking of buying Volvo

The answer to "will it cause the check engine light to come on"? The answer is "YES"- my check engine light was on, took it in and was told it was because the fuel guage was reading that there was no gas in the tank and that there were no other problems with the truck.

Someone said this was a re-call though?? For the 2006?

  • Cynthia Nichols Feb 08, 2010

I checked with Chevy customer service and there is NOT a re-call on this problem, as a matter of fact- after the fuel gauge went out, the CD player stopped working, and the HVAC went out- none of this was taken care of I drove the car for almost a year without hvac

I had the Fuel Pump assembly changed and the Flex fuel module under the dash about knee level. I was told it may be a ground problem. I removed all Ground cables and cleaned them. I also cleaned off battery terminals. Is it possible there is a bad ground on wire harness to fuel pump?

Khooper, in another forum, told me that "Chevron Techron Fuel System Treatment Plus can remove harmful sulfur deposits from the sending unit and a filmer agent that can prevent the deposition of said sulfur"

My 05 Trailblazer LT 2WD.
Erratic readings, and when the fuel level was below 1/2 full, the needle would sit on "Empty" with the amber light staying on.

So I went to a dealer, they replaced the fuel level sensor (p/n 19177712 SEN KIT 3.107 $118.62) with labor $270.00 for a total of $398.86 this appears to have fixed it for now.

I also talked to another mechanic who blames ethanol for these deposits !

Sound like your fuel sending unit has gone bad. There is a sensor attached to the float on the sending unit that reads the floats position relative to the fuel in the tank, these sensors wear out over time and the float will stop reading the proper level. Unfortunately, most fuel senders that are in the fuel tank also come equipped with a new fuel pump on them, therefore making them a higher price. But you are definately going to have to have that replaced unless you feel safe relying on your trip meter. Hope this helps.

'04 Explorer xlt ...my fuel guage & check engine light stay on & my fuel guage shows empty on a full tank. two mechanics ran diagnostics and nothing registers as 'wrong'

You have a check light on--you have codes

Fuel gauge is not accurate

Need a different shop that has a data base,
so they can use reference material for your
vehicle & resolve

Did you go for a road test with the mechanic &
did they have a scanner hooked to the DLC
under the dash,if not you wasted your time with
them

Fuel guage always shows empty

It sounds as if the fuel tank sending unit is faulty. This is a small float connected to a variable resistor on the fuel pump/sending unit assembly. Unfortunately this assembly is fairly expensive (over $300) and the fuel tank may need to be removed to replace it.

Fuel guage was erratic then went past full mechanic installed a new pump and sending unit now it stayed at 1/4 tank and when I filled it itwent below empty. bad sending unit or bad guage or bad mechanic?

Test the gauge by using a test light ,and grounding the test light clip to a good known ground, then touch the pink wire on the connector harness going to the tank, with the connector unplugged, and key on,the gauge will move slowly to the empty mark, and lower ,then remove the test light and it will go past full,if it does this,it is a good gauge, and the sending unit, was put in wrong,or the part was bad.

My fuel gauge says its empty

Your fuel costs too much, put more in it. Other wise, it probably has a faulty sending unit(sensor) Fill it up and see what it says then. Set your trip gauge and check the mileage or what ever u use there.

Fuel guage stays on empty and low fuel light stays on,no other problems

You might have a leak in the float in the fuel tank sender unit (the float should sit on top of the fuel and feedback info to the gauge - the fuel gauge staying on empty might mean that the float is either leaking or it is stuck).

Gas guage-oxygen sensor?

The oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the fuel gauge. There are two possibilities for the gas gauge error, first it could be the in-tank gas level sensor or it could be a defective stepper motor which drives the gauge. A professional scan tool can determine the fuel level being sent by the in-tank sensor, if that disagrees with the gauge, then the stepper motor needs replacing.

I have a 2005 Saturn Relay. Everytime we fill-up

Some of these GM's have a seperate fuel guage relay under the dash. Their not cheap. Since you could have anything from a bad sender in the tank to a bad relay its best to leave this to a professional. Next time this happens try smacking the fuel tank a few times hard. If the gauge goes up its most likely a sender in the tank issue. If nothing happens then it really needs to be diagnosed correctly.

Cannot freely pump gas into my 2000 ford taurus

The gas guage is a seprate problem, the gas fill hose may have a sharp ben in the hose or kink, the gas pump hase a shut off valve that shuts off the pump if gas does not flow freely ie:blockage or full tank, I would visualy inspect the filler hose from the gas cap to the tank for again sharp bends or kinks, if the filler hose is in anyway restricked the pump may asume the tank is full.
the gas guage: is usualy a simple flot on a rod in the tank (like a toilet tank has) instead of opening or closing a valve it operates a "potentiometer" veriable position sensor (kind of like a dimmer switch).
if the float gets stuck the guage will stay in that position, the guage gets the signal via the wire harnes, so check the electric circit.
A trick I used on one of my jeeps (I removed the guages ) I filled the tank, reset the trip odometer to zero, put a jeerycan and a couple gallons of gas in the jeep, then drove normaly a week or so till I ran out of gas. wrote down the mileage on the trip odometer. gerrycan gas got me to the gas station.
divided the mileage by half. I fill up the tank all the way the reset the trip odometer to zero, when I reach the half mileage of the tank I fill up again and repeat

Fuel gauge showing empty

open circuit in the fuel level sensor. mounted in tank. as the fuel level in the tank starts to drop the arm will move past the dead spot on the sensor and the gauge will start reading again.i dont recommend diy replacement of the fuel level sender.
