'07 Elantra - when you turn the key, nothing happens -- nothiing electrical works - if you get out of the car, lock it (with remote), wait a bit, then unlock it, the car starts normally - the clock and radio need to be reset. happened twice in about a year but after the second time it has happened 5 or 6 times in last 3 months. then yesterday, it happened again but now it will not lock (with remote) and will not start.

What chip are you talking about ? The key transponder chip ? This is part of the -anti-theft system ! If you replace the chip it has to be progammed or it won't work, is the theft light lit on the instrument cluster ? When you turn the key to the start position nothing happens , starter does not engage an spin the engine ? If this is the problem your having your best bet is take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop or have an automotive locksmith check it out .

So if your Elantra won't start, turn the key to where you can move the shift .... Having exact same problem on my 2011 elantradid you find out ...
If you have a second key, try that one. Sometimes 1 key will unlock, 1 key will start. If not it would be the anti theft or security system disabling the ignition module. Which is why it won't even try to turn over.
dear friend-you have two things that can be at fault at this stage, first of it can be the electrical unit behind the ignition that is intermittend,or as you say you move the gearshift around meaning that you have a auto,so you have a micro switch(neutral switch) that can be faulty.check these out and it should solve you problem.
Check that the battery connections are tight and secure. If yes, check the starter motor connectors and check current to the starter while the ignition key is turned. If there is no current, try wiring the starter directly to the battery. If it turns, then the problem is in the wiring or it could be the starter motor fuse. If the starter does not turn, remove the starter and take it to an auto parts store for testing.
